Into The Spider-Verse Gets a Sequel and Spin-Off

So Many Spiders, So Little Time

While it has yet to be released, Sony’s animated Spider-Man crossover flick appears to be generating quite a large amount of positive buzz due to the diverse cast of wall-crawlers and it’s tongue-in-cheek narrative. Apparently, that’s enough for the studio to push forward not only with a sequel, but also an upcoming spin-off series set to focus on fan-favorite character Spider-Gwen. Seems like the spider-fever isn’t going away anytime soon!

There has been plenty of positive buzz about Sony’s new animated, Marvel-adjacent adventure Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. And the studio is clearly enthusiastic too, as it has already started finding people to work on both a sequel and a spin-off.

With just a couple of weeks left until Spider-Verse is loosed upon the wider world, with its story of Miles Morales (Shameik Moore), a Spidey living and hero-ing in an alternate universe meeting some of his fellow web-slinging types and teaming up to save all their realities from a nefarious, cross-dimensional scheme.

Sony has hired Avatar: The Last Airbender TV/DC video ‘toon veteran Joaquim Dos Santos to direct the follow-up, which has its plot details naturally shrouded in mystery for now but will be hinted at in the first film.

Then there’s the even more nebulous spin-off, with The Hollywood Reporter hearing that Lauren Montgomery, who has worked on Voltronand, like De Santos, with the DC animation team, is making a deal to tackle the spin-off, a female character-focused story likely anchored by Hailee Steinfeld’s Spider-Gwen. Bek Smith, a writer on US TV series Zoo, is on script duty for that one.

Let’s hope all this confidence is warranted in regards to Into The Spider-Verse. That being said, given how the elsewhere Spider-Men have always been one of the most interesting aspects of the Spidey-lore, we’d still be up to see a Spider-Gwen series hit the small screen even if the first film flops, especially if it features that epic animation!
