Attack On The Big Screen
Another day, another anime/manga property set to be put through the Hollywood machine and presented to the western world as a brand new feature flick. In this instance, it just so happens to be one of modern Japanimation’s golden boys – the action epic known as Attack on Titan. Given how it’s vast popularity has taken over the anime landscape in recent years, it’s not at all surprising studios would seek it out as a prime candidate to be adapted into live-action.
According to an article on Empire –
Despite its constant frustration with making a live-action movie out of Akira, Warner Bros. is still looking to turn other Manga and anime properties into projects. Harry Potter producer David Heyman jumped aboard the effort to make a new film adaptation of Attack On Titan in January of last year and now they’ve locked down a director in It‘s Andy Muschietti.
Muschietti has had huge success with It, and is in the middle of making the second part of the Stephen King horror adaptation. He’ll segue from that to Titan, though it’s early days for the new movie, which doesn’t yet have a writer attached.
This isn’t the first time that Eren, Mikasa and the rest of the Survey Corps have been given the all-star treatment, since back in to 2015 two live-action adaptations were produced in Japan, though the reception to these films was less than positive. While having the director of It on board is certainly a step in the right direction, many are still sceptical as to how they will manage to condense the intrigue and mystery of the manga’s original story into an average run time, not to mention the fear the whole thing turning into a CGI mess.
