Locked, Loaded and Legendary
Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 seems to have made quite a splash thanks to its new and surprisingly polished battle royal feature, with many citing Blackout to be the saving grace of the first entry in the franchise to abandon its single player campaign. While we can’t deny the fun to be had in these new modes, we still long for solo missions that can measure up to some of these iconic moments strewn across the series.
#5: âWMDâ
âCall of Duty: Black Opsâ (2010)
As youâve probably guessed from the title, âWMDâ has players tracking down a weapon of mass destruction to prevent an attack on US soil. The missionâs opening moments focus on two members of the US Air Force taking off from a California base on route to Russia to help assist a CIA team in their efforts to enter the facility housing the WMD. Players control a member of the Air Force and a member of the CIA team, switching back and forth between Major Neitsch surveying the scene through his fighter jetâs thermal screen and Jason Hudson attempting to enter to the facility on the ground, which feels like something right out of a movie.
#4: âKarmaâ
âCall of Duty: Black Ops IIâ (2012)
The sixth mission of the second Black Ops game sees members of a Joint Special Operations Command go undercover in an attempt to infiltrate a high-end exotic island in the Cayman Islands and track down a cyber weapon named âKarma.â Players take control of David Mason once safely on the island, but when his cover is blown all-out warfare ensures â exactly what we expect from a Call of Duty game! In this mission, players also control a small robotic spider named âZiggy,â hack into the islandâs computer systems, and use a thermal cannon on their way to discovering the secrets behind âKarma.â
#3: âDemon Withinâ
âCall of Duty: Black Ops IIIâ (2015)
The highlight of âDemon Withinâ is an epic flashback to the Siege of Bastogne during World War II. The protagonist finds himself as a Private during the second Great War whoâs been ordered to the front lines. Itâs a nice change of pace from all the high-tech warfare and evil robots found in the gameâs campaign, offering a more simplistic and nostalgic take on war. Of course, thereâs still some futuristic elements scattered throughout the level, as players are seemingly teleported from one part of the siege to the next, but overall the missionâs focus on simplicity is a welcomed surprise.
#2: âSuffer With Meâ
âCall of Duty: Black Ops IIâ (2012)
The seventh mission of the second game is arguably the most important in terms of the campaignâs overall story, requiring a major decision by players that will affect the rest of the game, and it includes the death of an important character as well. The operation takes place in Panama in 1989 and revolves around Frank Woods attempting to capture the former commander of the Panama Defense Forces in an effort to get closer to the main target, Raul Menendez. This level is basically a major firefight from beginning to end, and also highly emotional, so itâs best to use the bathroom prior to hitting play!
#1: âVorkutaâ
âCall of Duty: Black Opsâ (2010)
This mission takes home the number-one spot on our list for its incredible sense of immersion in escaping the Soviet prison of Vorkuta, along with its kick-ass step-by-step objective list ranging from âAscend From Darkness,â âReign Fire,â âRaise Hellâ and âFreedom.â Players take control of Alex Mason once again as he escapes the Russian prison in 1963 alongside Viktor Reznov and ends up liberating the majority of the camp. Accompanied by an incredible soundtrack, the action in âVorkutaâ literally makes us feel like weâre at the center of a small revolution taking place within the dark halls of the prison camp, leaving the hairs on the back of our neck standing at full attention!
