The Start of Something Spooky
Until Dawn remains a gem in the mind of gamers even years after of its release. The choice-based mechanics, 80s horror atmosphere, assortment of bloody deaths and ongoing mystery was a breath of fresh air for those that felt the genre had been stale as of late. While Supermassive Games tried to capture lightning in a bottle once again with Rush of Blood and The Inpatient, those titles didn’t quite have the same effect. Now it seems they have decided to go back to their roots by revealing the The Dark Pictures Anthology; a series of horror games in the same vein of Until Dawn. From the looks of the first instalment, Man of Medan, it looks like our new batch of future victims are headed for a watery grave…
According to an article on Gamespot –
“During Gamescom 2018, Bandai Namco announced a new horror anthology series from Supermassive Games, the developer of choose-your-own horror story Until Dawn. Called The Dark Pictures Anthology, the series will consist of standalone, “branching cinematic horror” games. The first game, Man of Medan, was shown off with a trailer and featured during Microsoft’s Inside Xbox presentation.
Man of Medan is a supernatural horror story set in the South Pacific. Like many horror stories, it starts with friends going on vacation–in this case, they’re going diving. As shown in the trailer, some of the friends mess with things they shouldn’t, unearthing a curse of some sort that takes over their ship. The trailer ends with a ghostly 1940s-ish woman who’s up to no good.
Like in Until Dawn, you’ll be able to make decisions that shape the story in Man of Medan. This includes who lives and who dies, which is likely to create some difficult choices.”
