Now That’s A Puzzle…
With it’s beautiful visuals, clever use of optical illusions and serene soundtrack, Monument Valley quickly established itself as the game that all iOS and Android users had an obligation to play. Not only were the puzzle-platforming sections a delightful challenge, but each of the level designs were presented as if they were classically-inspired paintings. Stunning in every facet, it’s easy to see why this title and its subsequent sequel became such hits. That being said, we weren’t expecting it to earn the admiration and attention of Hollywood.
According to an article on Gamespot –
“Video game movies are rarely any good, but Hollywood keeps making them. The latest video game to be spun into is a movie is the indie hit, M.C. Escher-inspired Monument Valley.
Paramount, which is producing the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie featuring Jim Carrey, is developing the Monument Valley film. Patrick Osborne, who won an Oscar for his 2014 animated short film Feast, is set to direct it. According to Deadline, the Monument Valley film will ‘send contemporary live-action characters into the game’s extraordinary, mend-bending world.’
Monument Valley launched in 2014, with a sequel debuting in 2017. The series is developed by Ustwo Games, and studio head Dan Gray told Deadline, ‘We’re incredibly happy that we’ve found the perfect creative partners in Paramount, Weed Road, and Patrick Osborne to champion this concept forward into another medium.'”
While we can certainly see the appeal with Monument Valley’s unique aesthetic, we’re still on the fence about a cinematic adaptation, given the game’s minimal lore and lack of character focus. While it’s impossible to say whether or not the creative team behind the upcoming film can turn put a good spin on it, we’re having dangerous flashbacks to similar outings such as the Angry Birds movie. Let’s hope that the silver screen doesn’t destroy what little charm Princess Ida has managed to accumulate.
