A Bigger Boat Isn’t Going To Help Here
You would have thought that cinemas’ obsession with sharks would have waned in recent years, since the majority of the flicks surrounding these undersea predators tend to be lacklustre at best. However, that doesn’t seemed to have deterred Jason Statham, who is set to to take on an ancient Megalodon in the upcoming blockbuster of the same name. While we doubt it will turn out to be the next Jaws, let’s at least hope it doesn’t end up like some of these flops.
#3: “Deep Blue Sea” (1999)
You would have thought a film that combined super-sharks with Samuel L. Jackson would have made for a fun time, but alas the end result turned out to be a boring slog with sub-par effects. The only reason you should ever venture out to watch this is for Sam Jackson’s iconic death scene along with LL Cool J’s ridiculous over-acting, otherwise you should let this one drown in its own mediocrity.
#2: “Jaws: The Revenge” (1987)
“You’re only supposed to blow the bloody Jaws off!” Yes, Michael Caine is in this film. No, we have no idea why he would subject himself to it, all we know is that aside from his occasional funny outburst, this film is mockery of everything that made the original great with no redeeming value whatsoever. The original shark comes back from the dead and chases down the family of the first protagonist half-way around the world? We aren’t buying it.
#1: “Sharknado” (2013)
A perfect example of how not to make self-aware parody films, the idea of a tornado filled with sharks running amok could have made for a rip-roaringly good time in the hands of a capable team. Unfortunately for audiences, the end result turned out to be so poor and have such little charm to its name that the whole thing became a chore to sit through. It’s numerous sequels have done little to remedy the problem, turning the Sharknado name into a joke. Just not the kind the creators were probably hoping for.
