Just Stay Down Already!
Whether they soak up damage like a sponge or return from the dead for a second bout, we can certainly appreciate a video game opponent that presents a challenge, one that forces the player to think on their feet and pull out all the stops in order to achieve victory. That being said, there are a select few who have managed to dodge death for so long it’s almost become a running gag!
While we’re not saying that any of these three are poor excuses for in-game foes, you can’t deny that after so many resurrections that battling them almost becomes exhausting!
Fair warning, there are SPOILERS AHEAD!Â
#3: Your Nemesis
“Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor” (2014)
By far the most engrossing aspect of the whole game, having a unique Orc to serve as your nemesis was one of the game’s biggest highlights. Each time they would appear, their physique would be more damaged, their responses harkening back to the manner in which they were killed. It made the whole experience feel all the more personal. But even we have to admit that watching Golm Blood-Axe return at the last minute after we had clearly cut off his head ten times beforehand is overdoing it just a bit…
#2: The Spider
“Limbo” (2010)
Everybody hates spiders, especially ones that have a tendency to impale children with their razor-sharp legs. In spite of all the nightmare visuals, horrendous death scenes and sense of foreboding, nothing inspired fear quite like this behemoth, who always seemed to show up when we least expected it. Dead set on tearing the player apart, even after it loses most of its limbs it still finds a way to track us down. Needless to say we were very happy to remove its final appendage.
#1: The Hunter
“Dead Space” (2008)
In space, no one can hear as your are repeatedly stabbed by a crazed Necromorph. In spite of being armed with a Plasma Cutter and all other manner of weaponry, this is one creature that Isaac Clarke can’t kill. Able to regenerate each of its limbs, it relentlessly pursued him all over the Ishimura, each appearance ramping up the tension beyond belief. There’s no words to to say how relieved we were when it was finally torched by the spaceship’s thrusters. Too bad it’s legacy lived on in both the Ubermorph and Regenerators.
