Evil = Productive
Whether they are seeking galactic conquest, courting death itself or falling prey to insanity, there’s no end to the atrocious deeds that anime villains have committed in pursuit of their goals. While some certainly have varying degrees of complexity to their names, it’s fair to say that nothing good can come from taking advice from these antagonists, right?
While global genocide, unfathomable depravity and a god complex are certainly characteristics one should never hope to replicate, we can’t help but look at these three villains and admire a “specific” aspect about their character.
#3: Team Rocket – Dedicated Employees
Talk about going beyond the call of duty. While other Rocket grunts would have called it quits ages ago, the trio of Jessie, James and Meowth have been hunting down Pikachu for over twenty years now. They have been blasted off more times than we can count, yet they always come back next episode ready to cause more trouble. Quitting just isn’t in their vocabulary, and serve as a testament to anyone caught in career-slump who is thinking of giving up.
#2: Cell – Striving for Perfection
Sure, he drained hundreds of innocents of their lives, threatened to blow up the planet and even absorbed Krillin’s love interest, but if you look past all the murder you’ll see an android that’s doing his best to better himself. Starting off as nothing more than a rather-foul looking creature, through hard-work and dedication he was able to improve both his looks as well as his power-level until he was the strongest being in the world. Goes to show what can be accomplished if you put in the time and effort.
#1: Light Yagami – Thinking Outside the Box
They say the pen is mightier than the sword, which is certainly true if you happen to have a Death Note to write in. While Light’s crusade to become God of the New World led to a whole lot of people meeting their maker, the way he managed to succeed through careful planning and tactics just goes to show that there’s no obstacle that can’t be solved. There’s no better example of brains over brawn in anime, even if said brain is narcissistic to the point of madness.
