Don’t Fear The Reaper
Whether it’s a galactic firefight, outrunning a horrendous monster or just tripping over the edge of the map, ever player has encountered a game over at least once in their gaming careers. While it can be frustrating, unless the game itself purposefully uses it as a means to further the narrative, death is often brushed aside as just another obstacle to overcome. However, there are a few titles who have decided to take the concept of the Grim Reaper and turn him into a character.
Whether they’re used for humorous effect or portrayed as the epitome of badassery, these versions of the skeletal slayer certainly know how to pile up the bodies!
#3: “The Sims” series” (2000-18)
You can try your best to build the perfect family, but even they aren’t safe from the occasional fatality. Should a Sim find themselves falling victim to an accident or the player’s own cruelty, they’ll be paid a visit by the cloaked embodiment of death itself. However, instead of a beacon of despair, the end-bringer turns out to be something of a jolly chap that’s capable of being reasoned with, wooed, and should you input the right cheat codes, even hired as an employee!
#2: “Darksiders II” (2012)
Imagine if Death decided to hit a gym, got itself the deepest voice imaginable and was armed with a whole arsenal of apocalyptic weapons. The result would undoubtedly be this particular Horseman. In order to save his brother War from execution, the Pale Rider finds himself taking on the forces of heaven, hell and literally else in between. Given how he manages to slay them all in the end, we’d say he’s certainly living up to the name, despite his refusal to wear a shirt.
#1: “Grim Fandango” (1998)
Turns out ferrying souls to the other side is exactly the same as working as a travel agent. This unorthodox rendition of death just so happens to go by the name of Manny Calavera, a smooth-talking underdog who finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy that leads him on a wild chase to save the beautiful Meche from his superior’s less than virtuous intentions. Witty, ingenious and funny beyond belief, Manny’s charm will have you wanting to visit the Land of the Dead ASAP!
