Cannes Do
Time to roll out the red carpet, Mesdames et Messieurs! The Cannes Film Festival has announced its official lineup for its 71st edition and merde, weâre excited. Before we dive in to this yearâs slate of artsy-fartsy flicks premiering in cinemas along the Boulevard de la Croisette, letâs briefly discuss the buzzed about projects that wonât be screening at the prestigious festival.
The ongoing battle between Cannes and Netflix continues to grow; following a new ruling that would essentially ban all of their projects from competition, Netflix has decided to pull all of its films from the fest. While this may disappoint those who believe Netflix should have a fair shot at the Palme dâOr regardless of their distribution practices, they can rest assured that Adam Sandlerâs latest opus is still set to debut worldwide on April 27th.
Cinephiles will be disappointed to learn that auteur enfant terribles Gaspar Noe, Lars Von Trier, Harmony Korine and the legendary Terry Gilliam will not be showing up at this yearâs event. One can expect their latest projects to pop up at TIFF or Telluride in the fall, if completed in time.
Now, on to the prestige pics that will be screening. Aside from the previously announced premiere of Solo: A Star Wars Story and the festival opener Everybody Knows (starring power couple Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem), buzzworthy movies making their debut include Spike Leeâs (Do The Right Thing) BlacKkKlansman, David Robert Mitchellâs (It Follows) Under the Silver Lake, Matteo Garroneâs (Gomorrah) Dogman, Christophe Honoréâs (Love Song) Sorry Angel, Wim Wenderâs (Pina) Pope Francis â A Man of His Word, and Jean-Luc Godardâs (Breathless) The Image Book.
