Top 3 Underrated Anime Villains

They’re Just As Malicious As The Rest

Great anime villains are almost an art form by this point. In many cases, the antagonist can make or break or a series depending on their dastardly deeds. We’ve seen everything from sympathetic monsters to charming devils to scumbags who draw from the worst of what humanity has to offer. In some ways its hard to stand out these days, after all the shadows of characters such as Griffith, Frieza, Light Yagami, The Major and Dio Brando still linger over all who have come after.

While some may not measure up to the legacy set up by these titans of villainy, that’s not to say they shouldn’t get the recognition they deserve, especially when it comes to these three. They’re not the second coming of Char Aznable by any means, but that doesn’t stop them from wholly entertaining us!

Fair warning, there are MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!

#3: Misogi Kumagawa
“Medaka Box Abnormal” (2012)

While there’s no forgiving his outrageous crimes, we can’t help but feel sorry for this student. Rejected and mistreated his whole life, Kumagawa is essentially empty inside in spite of the constant smile plastered on his face. Such a fragile psyche would be bad enough, but then he’s got his devastating abilities to go with them. While he normally likes to summon giant screws in order to end his foes, he certainly isn’t afraid to bust out his deadliest power; All Fiction. Able to undo any facet of reality he chooses, he once removed all colour from existence just to torment an opponent. He may be a loser up until the end, but he’s one easily capable of dragging the rest of the world down with him.

#2: Me-Mania
“Perfect Blue” (1997)

What makes this film so psychologically terrifying is how painfully real it is. We’ve all heard horror stories revolving around internet culture, especially about how obsessive some fans can be. Well, that’s put on full display with this creep. With a perverse and twisted desire towards the idol version of Mima, he starts to stalk her constantly, even attempting to violate her at one point. Both pathetic and frightening in equal measure, Mr Me-Mania is the perfect encapsulation of one of modern day society’s biggest diseases.

#1: Akio Ohtori
“Revolutionary Girl Utena” (1997)

Privilege, power and perfect bone structure;  this prince is nothing short of charming supernova. He’s also a colossal douche who likes his princesses as passive as possible, taking great pleasure in seducing anyone just to get them under his control. This includes our heroine, his macho buddies, even his own sister. A not so subtle metaphor for the devil, this particular morning star is all about getting what he wants when he wants, and those that deny him always end up falling to his silver tongue.
