Sure, they may not be the ones who save the kingdom, slay the ultimate evil and find true love, but it can’t be denied that without the assistance of these four-legged assistants, our favorite video game heroes would never have been able to see their quests all the way through to the end. Whether they’re born of the supernatural or just your average mare, it’s safe to say these particular fictional horses are often just as essential to their respective protagonists as their swords.

While we certainly have no shortage of options, we still feel that these three equine stand tall as the best companions one could ask for. After all, they stood by their owners in their hour of need while a sensible beast would have galloped off!

#3: Ruin
“Darksiders” (2010)

You can’t call yourself one of the Four Horsemen without having an apocalyptic steed by your side, and Ruin certainly knows how to to bring the thunder. Well, flames in this instance. As War’s one true companion, this fiery entity has aided him in his battles against minions of both heaven and hell. When all of creation is literally crumbling around you, there’s no one else you’d rather have by your side than this charred stallion.

#2: Roach
“The Witcher” series (2007-2015)

Friends, lovers and enemies all come and go, but at the end of the day the one person a Witcher can rely on is his horse. This goes double for Geralt, whose faithful steed has managed to assist him across countless battles and contracts. The poor mare has had to deal with everything from Water Hags to Leshens to Vampires to Archgriffons as well as the all-consuming White Frost, yet she continues to shrug it off. Even in the Wolf’s lowest moment, he can also count on his trusty partner to get him from A to B as fast as the wind can carry her.

#1: Epona
“The Legend of Zelda” series (1986-2017)

She may not have any hidden magical talents, but she’s as much a part of Link’s legend as both his green clothing and Master Sword. Whether it’s stopping the moon from crashing into Hyrule, besting the multiple reincarnations of Ganondorf or exploring the great wilds, Princess Zelda has this iconic horse to thank just as much as he pointy-eared hero. We can only imagine what Epona is going to have to deal next with when the kingdom is inevitably thrown back into chaos!
