They’re The Voices Of The World’s Greatest Hero

At his core, the Last Son of Krypton is a beacon of hope, one who represents the best of humanity. While not without his flaws, the fact he uses his godly powers to protect the ideals of truth, justice and all that good stuff still paints him as a character we can all feel inspired by. Might explain while even after all these decades he remains just as relevant. After all, even the broodiest of Caped Crusaders needs someone to believe in.

Throughout animated series, flicks and video games, these actors have managed to take on the Man of Steel’s mantle and make it their own, but which wore the the big red S better?

Fair warning, there are SPOILERS AHEAD!

#3: Mark Valley

While it may have been a smaller role, Superman’s involvement in the film adaptation of The Dark Knight Returns was nonetheless vital. After Batman comes out of retirement and starts causing trouble, his former comrade is ordered to stop him once and for all. In this grim future, the Man of Steel is now a tool of the American government and his relationship with the Dark Knight has never been more strenuous. This results in the superhero slugfest fans had been dying to see, and yet all the while Mark Valley’s performance shows that deep down Superman still cares for his old comrade. This emotional weight combined with the grit of his newfound duties gave us a hero whose ideals of hope have be stained, but not wholly discarded, and as such made him just as compelling to watch as Batman.

#2: George Newbern

He’s portrayed Superman at his very best and at his very worst, with both results being equally captivating. Throughout the Justice League franchise as well as animated flicks such as Superman vs. The Elite, the Man of Tomorrow was shown to be a character of unequivocal calibre, always willing to risk himself for the greater good and forever believing in the ideals past down by his parents. Then you have the Injustice video game series, where we see what Supeman might look like if he gave up hope and decided to take humanity by the reins, often with terrifying results. Any Kal-El naysayers out there may want to check out Mr Newbern’s work before dismissing the character as one-note.

#1: Tim Daly

To many, not only was this particular version of Supes their first exposure to the crimson-caped protector of Metropolis, but also when the character truly came into his own. Superman: The Animated Series served as the basis for not only developing the titular lead’s personality, but also his iconic rogues gallery. Leading on from that, his appearances in projects such as Superman/Batman: Public Enemies and Superman/Batman: Apocalypse only further expanded on the Man of Steel’s wholehearted charisma, not to mention giving us epic examples of how even the world’s biggest boy scout packs a mean punch. You’re the man Tim.

We also have to give special mention to his son Sam Daly, whose take on Superman during the events of Flashpoint Paradox easily captured the charm and heroics we’ve come to love about the character!
