Are Moviegoers Ready For Freddy?
Despite getting the likes of Chris Columbus to direct, many are worried that the upcoming live-action Five Nights at Freddy’s film will crash and burn on arrival. They’re not wrong to think so, after all video game adaptations have something of a tragic past in Hollywood. Throw in the material they have to work with and in all likeliness Freddy and his friends will probably end up facing the wrath of fans and critics alike. Or, maybe they’ll surprise us?
Hopefully Mr Columbus and the writers will play it smart and deliver a flick that carries over the scares of the original video game. How can they accomplish this? We have a couple of ideas.
#3: Give The Night Guard A Character
Understandably, throughout the series the players have always assumed the role of the Night Guard; the guy who always gets jumped by Freddy and his creepy pals. This of course wouldn’t crossover very well to the big screen. We’re not asking for a deep and layered protagonist, just someone we can empathise with as he finds himself trapped in the worst job in the world.
#2: Practical vs. CGI
We imagine that CGI will have to implemented at some point, but for the most part Freddy and the rest of the animatronics are nothing more than stuffed suits. The game’s true sense of dread came from the fact that these robotic children’s entertainers look like they could easily exist in our world, so making physical replicas of the FNAF crew would be a must. After all, seeing something that you know is physically there is the first step towards creating a frightening atmosphere.
#1: Scares Over World-Building
The last thing people want is a Five Nights at Freddy’s Cinematic Universe. What made the first game so compelling was how it executed it’s weird premise; haunted robot bear trying to kill off some poor guy who should really know when to hand in his notice. We don’t need allusions to the Purple Guy, the other animatronics or any of the other events that take place across the rest of the franchise. If you manage to deliver a entertaining experience with a laser focus on the horror side of thing, then the FNAF film has every chance of succeeding.
