Leave Logic At The Door
Above all else, video games are meant to be enjoyed. Yes, the medium has evolved to the point where some entries can be considered works of art, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for the silly to stand right beside the masterpieces. Sometimes, a great video game doesn’t need to do anything more than a well-executed idea in order to succeed, even if that idea itself is utterly bonkers.
You may be thrown right into the thick of it, but there’s no denying that these games more than achieve what they set out to do; delight us in their beautifully mad worlds.
#3: “Antichamber” (2013)
Seems simple enough, escape an unknown facility. There’s only one problem; there’s a million puzzles and illusions standing in your way. It’s hard to tell if this game was designed by a genius or a maniac, but either way we can’t deny how exhilarating it is to test ourselves against mind-bending obstacles. While you certainly have to keep your wits about you, you’ll be too focus on trying to get through each room to really care about who, what, where and why!
#2: “Clustertruck” (2016)
Who knows if this game was made on a dare of not, but either way the end product turned out to be a beautifully nonsensical platformer. In order to reach the end of each level, players have to literally jump across moving trucks, all the while dealing with some increasingly crazy environments. You don’t know what living is until you’ve leapt off a flying truck while avoiding a whole barrage of lasers.
#1: “Earth Defense Force” series (2003-2015)
Even if this game does have a plot, even if it does feels the need to shout exposition with some of the most laughable narration in all of gaming, we aren’t paying attention. We’re here to fly around the stage with our robot wings and shoot down wave after wave of giant insects, robots, aliens, kaiju and whatever else this wonderfully crazy franchise can conjure up. Special thanks to Shadow of New Despair for literally throwing everything at us plus the kitchen sink!
