Michael Bay Goes From Transformers to Robopocalypse

Michael Bay may be done directing Transformers movies, but there should still be plenty of robots in his foreseeable filmography. According to Variety, Bay has been tasked with directing Robopocalypse, an adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson’s 2011 novel. Steven Spielberg was originally set to direct the film, although production was put on hold in 2013. After almost five years of delays, Spielberg is handing the directorial duties over to Bay. Spielberg also selected Bay to direct the first Transformers movie, which came out in 2007.

Drew Goddard of The Cabin in the Woods, The Martian, and Netflix’s Daredevil was originally hired to pen the screenplay for Robopocalypse. It’s unclear if Bay will bring on a new writer now, however. A release date hasn’t been set for the film either, but it might be wise to distance it from the debut of Terminator 6, another robot uprising movie that comes out in 2019.

In addition to Robopocalypse, Bay has also signed up to direct 6 Underground. Little is currently known about this action flick, although the writers are Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick of Deadpool and Zombieland. Production is expected to begin this summer with the film coming out a year later. 2019 will also see the release of a live-action Dora the Explorer movie, which Bay is producing.

Although Bay’s Transformers movies were never critical darlings, they’ve performed exceedingly well financially. After 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight fell below expectations at the box office, however, it was announced that Paramount might reboot the franchise entirely. Is it possible that this will inspire Bay to step up his game with Robopocalypse and 6 Underground or are we in store for something explosively familiar?
