#2: “Gundam” franchise (1979-)

Netflix certainly isn’t short on mecha series, but there’s just no replacing one of the pioneers of the giant robot genre. While it has had a few missteps along the way, the majority of its titles have stood the test of time as masterful ventures into the realm of sci fi, mixing together intergalactic battles with meditations on war and its consequences. Honestly, by this point we’ll be happy if just one anime baring the Gundam name was picked up, whether it be the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Zeta, War in the Pocket, The 08th MS Team, SEED, 00, The Origin, Unicorn, Iron-Blooded Orphans, Thunderbolt or even Build Fighters! Yeah, there’s a lot to choose from…

#1: “Made in Abyss” (2017)

Don’t let the stunning visuals and adorable character models fool you, this series is an exploration into the unknown, and the unknown has some pretty horrific sights lying in wait. Along the way, they encounter all manners of creatures and curses that not only threaten their very lives, but also shatter any lingering preconceptions the audience might have had about this not being a dark series. It’s truly a modern gem of an anime not to be missed. Hurry up Netflix!
