If you’re not up to date on Star Wars: Rebels, consider this your SPOILER ALERT!
After four seasons and over seventy episodes, Star Wars: Rebels wrapped up in epic fashion with its final three half hours. George Lucas once compared Star Wars to poetry in the sense that all the movies rhyme. To that extent, itâs only fitting that the last episodes of this Disney XD series would follow the same formula as the original trilogy.
Taking a page from the 1977 classic, A Foolâs Hope found our heroes overcoming all the odds as the Loth-Wolves came roaring to their aid. In true Empire Strikes Back fashion, the first part of Family Reunion and Farewell worked up to an appropriately grim note as Imperial forces attacked Lothal, seemingly leaving the Rebels backed into a corner. Then in accord with Return of the Jedi, the final chapter saw Ezra Bridger surrender himself and confront Emperor Palpatine, once again voiced by the great Ian McDiarmid. Although the Emperor tries to manipulate Ezra with the promise of reuniting with his parents, the young Jedi ultimately resists the temptation and lets go of the past. For all the familiarity, the finale still managed to be fresh, dramatic, thrilling, humorous, and – above all else – fitting.
The ending works in virtually every major character from the series and almost all of them get a proper sendoff. Following the Battle of Endor, Zeb and Kallus take their bromance to the next level on Lira San where the Lasat people continue to thrive. Along with Rex and Chopper, Hera continues to assist the Rebel Alliance. We also learn that Hera was pregnant with Kanan’s child and welcomed their son, Jacen Syndulla, into the galaxy. Of course one member of the Ghost Crew’s fate remains unresolved. In order to save his friends, Erza blasts into hyperspace with Grand Admiral Thrawn at the mercy of the the purrgil. It’s unclear what happened to Erza and Thrawn, but Sabine Wren intends to find out.
The closing scene finds Sabine sporting a shorter hairdo and reuniting with a familiar face, Ahsoka Tano. It’s implied that these two fan favorites will embark on a journey to bring Ezra home. Could this be the setup for the next Star Wars animated series or even a live-action series? Will it bridge the gap between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, depicting the rise of the Resistance and the First Order? It’s not out of the question based on what we’ve heard from Dave Filoni, the show’s co-creator/executive producer, as well as the voice of Chopper.
On Rebels Recon, a YouTube series dedicated to Star Wars Rebels, Filoni confirmed that “both Ezra and Thrawn survive it!”
According to /Film, actor Donald Faison of Scrubs also asked Filoni a few questions at the episode’s premiere. In regards to a Sabine-Ahsoka series, Filoni stated, “Obviously, itâs intriguing. It would probably make a good story. And it would be a good idea. So I donât know. Weâll have to see⦔
While nothing is set in stone yet, it wouldn’t be surprising if we saw Ezra, Sabine, and Ahsoka again, especially since the Star Wars franchise isn’t ending anytime soon. Until we find out what’s in store for Filoni and the Ghost Crew, at least we can take solace in knowing that Star Wars Rebels left us on a high note.
