5 People You Didn’t Know Are One Award Away from an EGOT

For many, achieving an EGOT (meaning winning an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony) represents the pinnacle of success in the entertainment industry. To win any of these awards individually is a huge triumph, but it takes an inordinate amount of talent (and of course a bit of luck too) to rack up all four! Only 12 people in history, including Rita Moreno, Audrey Hepburn and Whoopi Goldberg, have managed to score this elusive title.

As if earning all 4 awards wasn’t impressive enough, at Sunday night’s Oscars, Robert Lopez, the genius songwriter behind movies like Coco and Frozen, became the first ever DOUBLE EGOT, with at least two of each award under his belt.

So who will be next to join the exclusive club? Many artists in Hollywood are so close to EGOT-ing they can almost taste it, and some of them may surprise you!

Here are 5 artists who are surprisingly only one award away from EGOT-ing:

John Legend

When Legend won a Tony Award in 2017 as co-producer of Jitney, he took one huge step towards achieving an EGOT, having already earned an Oscar and multiple Grammys. All that’s missing from this incredibly talented crooner’s mantel is an Emmy. We’re not sure about Legend’s acting skills, but he might want to consider taking on a role on television!

Cynthia Nixon

You probably know Cynthia Nixon best as Miranda on Sex and the City, but did you know she’s this close to becoming a bonafide Hollywood legend? Since Sex and the City ended in 2004, the actress has mostly focused on stage work, a move that clearly paid off, earning her 2 Tony Awards. Throughout her prolific career, she also picked up two Emmys for Sex and the City and a guest-starring role on Law & Order, as well as a Grammy for Best Spoken Word Album when she lent her voice to the audiobook of An Inconvenient Truth. Next up, Oscar!

Kate Winslet

The fact that Kate Winslet has won a bevy of awards throughout her career is not surprising, considering the iconic roles she has taken on over the past 20 years. But did you know that she is only one Tony shy of EGOT-ing? She won an Oscar for The Reader in 2008, an Emmy for Mildred Pierce in 2011 and a Grammy for narrating a children’s audiobook in 1999. We have no doubt she could complete her collection were she to set her sights on Broadway.

Frances McDormand

The two-time Oscar winner, who just picked up her second Academy Award for her stellar turn in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, has received tons of accolades throughout her amazing career. She’s won two Emmys and a scored a Tony for Best Actress in 2011. Time to drop that album and get yourself a Grammy, Frances!

Viola Davis

Many people were elated when Viola finally picked up a much deserved Oscar in 2016, after a long career of amazing work. But that award was meaningful for another reason, as it brought her incredibly close to becoming an EGOT. Having already garnered two Tonys and an Emmy, the How to Get Away with Murder actress is one Grammy away from earning the title.

Who do YOU think is most likely to earn the title of EGOT?
