The Man Of Tomorrow’s Finest Hours
While we’re sure than fans will be debating the topic until the end of days, the overall opinion regarding Superman’s current cinematic presence hasn’t exactly been positive. Given Warner Bros constant tampering, we can’t really blame Henry Cavill for not living up to the standards of previous Men of Steel. While we have seen bright spots in the form of Tyler Hoechin’s brief iteration of the character on The CW’s Supergirl series, its certainly been a while since we’ve blown away by an onscreen appearance of the DC’s strongest hero.
However, the same can’t be said for Superman’s presence DC Universe Animated Original Movies, where he continues to thrive as a champion of justice, unrestricted by studios. To celebrate, we’re going to look at three of the Last Son of Kypton’s best animated outings!
#3: “Superman/Batman: Public Enemies” (2009)
After Lex Luthor becomes President of the United States, the Man of Steel and the Caped Crusader find themselves will bulls-eyes on their backs, pursued by heroes and villains alike. While the crux of this film is the relationship shared by these two legendary characters, seeing Superman and Luthor engage in an epic clash is equally as fulfilling. It shows that while he’s all about truth, justice and the American way, the superpowered boyscout will always put what’s right above all else. Even if he has to punch a President.
#2: “Superman/Batman: Apocalypse” (2010)
The final fight scene against Darkseid in this film is downright magnificent. We not only get a sense of Superman’s strength as he wails on one of the deadliest beings in the universe, but even after every the Lord of Apokolips has done, he is still spared. Sure, Supes sends him packing after busting his face up, but he still shows him mercy. Oh, and the dynamic he shares with Supergirl throughout this flick is downright adorable.
#1: “Superman vs. The Elite” (2012)
Other than Richard Donner’s Superman, no film has managed to capture the character’s ideals as well as this animated flick. Faced with a group of radicals who are willing to kill for the sake of order, Superman is faced with a deadly ultimatum; kill or be killed. What does he do? He refuses to cross that line, and instead educates everyone how vengeance and anger disrupts the way to peace. In spite of being battered and beaten, Superman shows the world how it can strive to be better. Never change Smallville.
