Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt are now both on board for director Quentin Tarantino’s ninth feature film, which at long last has an official title: Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

For a while, the project had merely been known as Tarantino’s Manson family movie. The Hollywood Reporter quoted Tarantino in an article that gave us a better idea of the film’s plot, as well as how DiCaprio and Pitt fit into the mix.

Tarantino said it’s “a story that takes place in Los Angeles in 1969, at the height of hippy Hollywood. The two lead characters are Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio), former star of a Western TV series, and his longtime stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Both are struggling to make it in a Hollywood they don’t recognize anymore. But Rick has a very famous next-door neighbor…Sharon Tate.”

Pitt previously starred in Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds as Lt. Aldo Raine. DiCaprio, who has been attached to the project since last January, also starred as Calvin Candie in Tarantino’s Django Unchained. Margot Robbie has been rumored for a unspecified role in the film as well.

“I’ve been working on this script for five years, as well as living in Los Angeles County most of my life, including in 1969, when I was seven years old,” Tarantino further stated. “I’m very excited to tell this story of an L.A. and a Hollywood that don’t exist anymore. And I couldn’t be happier about the dynamic teaming of DiCaprio & Pitt as Rick & Cliff.”

As anticipated as Tarantino’s latest film is, it’s also had a rocky history. The Weinstein Company was originally going to distribute the film, but Tarantino backed out in the wake of Harvey Weinstein’s sexual misconduct scandal. This resulted in a bidding war that Sony Pictures ultimately won.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood hits theaters on August 9, 2019, lining up with the 50th anniversary of the Tate-LaBianca murders the Manson family was responsible for.
