Traditionally, the summer movie season commences on the first Friday of May. Avengers: Infinity War was originally set to kick things off this year on May 4. In an unprecedented move, however, Marvel has announced that the highly anticipated blockbuster will now be hitting theaters on April 27 in the U.S. instead!
We swear this isn’t an April Fool’s joke one month in advance. The news broke on Twitter when Marvel Studios asked, “On a scale of one to infinity, how excited are you to see #InfinityWar on May 4th?” Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr., proceed to reply, “Any chance I could see it earlier?”

Although this just looked like humorous banter at first, things got real when Marvel replied, “Anything for you, Mr. Stark! How’s April 27th?” Mr. Stark subsequently asked the studio to extend the invite to his “friends” and “the entire world.” With that, the deed was “done.”

This won’t just be a limited engagement either. Avengers: Infinity War is officially getting a wide release one whole week in advance. Of course the film was already opening in some international markets on April 27, but now North America will be on the same page as the worldwide market.
On a side note, it’s also worth mentioning that Marvel Studios’ tweet refers to Mr. Stark’s idea as “FANTASTIC.” We might be reading too much into it, but could Marvel be implying that a certain foursome will make a surprise appearance in Infinity War? Given Disney’s acquisition of Fox, it’s not out of the question, although still probably a long shot. In any case, this new release date makes it feel as if both Summer and Christmas are coming early in 2018!
