She’s A Survivor, But Will She Make It?
Whether it be consoles or the big screen, Lara Croft hasn’t had the easiest time. Some of her video games such as Angel of Darkness were very poorly received by players and critics alike, whereas the Angelina Jolie movies were…well…the less said about those the better.
However, it seems that Ms Croft has been bouncing back recently. 2013’s Tomb Raider reboot along with its sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider managed to give us a new interpretation of Lara that was every bit as badass as her previous counterparts, but also felt far more human and authentic. As a result, fans could easily gravitate towards her, especially given just how dire her plight was. She went though a tough time in those games!
Given their vast success, it was only a matter of time before a new cinematic adaption came along. Now with Alicia Vikander assuming the mantle, we’re hoping this film manages to finally give Lara the justice she deserves. In order to do so, we feel that these three aspects need to be addressed.
#1: Survivor Over Hero
From what the trailers have revealed, it appears that the film is blending together the location and narrative from the 2013 Tomb Raider game, while also introducing the villainous Trinity organisation from Rise of the Tomb Raider. While its great to see Walter Goggins strut his stuff as a villain, we’re hoping that the focus is placed on Lara’s struggle to stay alive over some kind of save-the-world plot.
#2: Bloodier The Better
We doubt it’s going to be Logan levels of death and gore, but at least give the action scenes some weight. Make it feel like Lara could be killed at any moment, how she is forced to use anything and everything in order to take out a swarm of crazed mercenaries dead-set on killing. Basically don’t make it out like she’s invincible, we want a heroine who is human above all else, and that means both sides need to get roughed up.
#3: As Little World-Hopping As Possible
The film is really selling us on this dangerous island that Lara finds herself marooned on. The worst thing movie could do is only spend half the time there before heading off on a globetrotting adventure. Make the island feel alive. Spend as much time as possible developing it and the threats it contains.
