When it comes to superhero movies, one person we’re always interested to hear from is director Kevin Smith. Anyone who has seen Clerks, Mallrats, and Smith’s other films knows that he’s something of a comic book aficionado. When the teaser for Sony’s Venom debuted earlier this week, it was met with a somewhat mixed response from fans. Smith summed up his initial thoughts on his podcast, Hollywood Babble-On.
Like many other fans, Smith wasn’t exactly blown away by the teaser, but isn’t completely giving up hope. Here are his Top 3 quotes regarding the trailer.
3. Tom Hardy: The Movie
Smith’s biggest issue with the Venom teaser is that it doesn’t even have Venom in it. All we got to see was star Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock. âI didnât see a Venom trailer,” Smith stated. “I saw Tom Hardy: The Movie.” Smith went on to acknowledge that the whole idea of teasers is to not give away too much, “but you canât call the movie Venom and not show Venom.â
2. Secret Wars Rant
Outside of the teaser, Smith is concerned about how the filmmakers are going to handle Venom’s origin story. As of now, it’s not only unclear if Spider-Man will appear, but if the filmmakers will borrow from the Secret Wars story arc where the alien symbiote that creates Venom first appears. Here’s how Smith put it: “So, there’s been questions about how do you tell the story, like you can’t tell it the way it was told in the comics unless you do the Secret Wars story, so everyone is wondering how the f*** is he going to become Venom and they showed the symbiote in the trailer trapped in the glass jar…”
1. It Still Looks Badass
As much as Smith criticized the Venom teaser, he ultimately admitted that the symbiote “looked kind of badass.” So at the end of the day, Smith wasn’t completely underwhelmed by the teaser. Let’s just hope we get to actually see Venom in the next trailer.
