Don’t assume your dreams are just fantasy. If you can imagine a world, believe in it… and dive in.
It’s taken over a decade and several spinoff games spread over multiple consoles, but Kingdom Hearts III is finally coming. Fans of the role-playing game franchise were given a glimmer of hope last year when a new trailer was unveiled at D23 2017. At D23 Expo Japan 2018, yet another trailer was released, offering a look at more new worlds, new characters, and new plot elements. Here are the three main highlights from the epic new preview.
3. Monsters, Inc.
After it was announced that the Toy Story gang would be dropping by in Kingdom Hearts III, many suspected that Monsters, Inc. would be the next Disney/Pixar film to make the cut. Fans shrieked when they got their first look at Monstropolis in the trailer, as our heroes crossed paths with Sulley, Mike Wazowski, and Boo. Sora, Donald, and Goofy have also taken on monstrous appearances to blend in. A one-eyed Donald is a dead ringer for Mike, sparking plenty of confusion and laughs.
2. Several Familiar Faces
Monstropolis wasn’t the only world displayed in the trailer. In Andy’s bedroom, we got to see even more of Woody, Buzz, Ham, and Rex, although it appears Mr. Potato Head is sitting this one out. In Kingdom of Corona, we got our first good look at Rapunzel and Flynn Rider, armed with hair and frying pans (who knew?). The game will additionally incorporate characters from the previous Kingdom Hearts games, including Princess Ariel, who Sora will be able to summon. We’ll gladly take that over another trip to Atlantica.
1. The Story
If you’re a truly loyal fan who has been keeping up with every new Kingdom Hearts game, you know that the story here will center on the return of Master Xehanort. He’s far from the only baddie Sora and company must deal with, however. The trailer finds our heroes once again confronting Marluxia, who they forgot about following the events of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. The preview also features the masked Vanitas, who references Ventus, a Keyblade wielder still resting in Sora’s heart. It appears Square Enix is bringing all the main villains together as Sora searches for the seven Guardians of Light, as well as the Key to Return Hearts. At least we’ll get to see more of those adorable Dream Eaters!
Bonus: Coming 2018
It’s no secret that Kingdom Hearts III is currently slated to come out sometime in 2018. It seems the developers aren’t reneging, as the latest trailer still says “Coming 2018.” Of course they have another 10 months to break this promise, but hopefully the new footage confirms that we won’t have to wait beyond 2019.
