2018 Grammy Awards: Top 5 Snubs

Last night’s Grammy’s presented us with some of the most innovative performances and entertaining moments; however, it also made way for some of the biggest snubs. Here are 5 snubs from the 2018 Grammy Awards that we just CAN’T get over.

#5: Jay-Z

The decorated artist was up for 8 nominations at the 2018 Grammy Awards, but surprisingly walked home empty handed. The artist with the most nominations this year, whose album 4:44 was an immense critical success, got arguably the most shocking snub this year. This recalls painful memories of Beyoncé’s epic snub at the 2017 Grammy’s. This couple just doesn’t get the recognition they deserve.

#4: Kendrick Lamar

While Kendrick Lamar is considered by many to be the greatest rapper of his generation, many felt that he was not properly recognized. Despite his many wins, he failed to pick up the awards for Best Album and Best Song of the year, to the chagrin of many.

#3: Despacito

Despacito lost both awards for Best Song and Best Record to Bruno Mars this year, in addition to losing Best Pop Duo/Group Performance to Portugal. The Man. This is surprising considering the popularity of the song, and its unprecedented success in North America. Its failure to win any awards is simply mind-boggling.

#2: SZA

In another shocking snub, this blossoming new star was completely shut out at this year’s Grammy awards. Despite being nominated in 5 major categories, SZA failed to be recognized for her outstanding talent. Ultimately, SZA wasn’t the only fierce female performer to go home empty handed…

#1: Women

We have one question… Huh? Of all the awards presented during the 3 and a half hour broadcast, only ONE of the winners was female. Alessia Cara picked up the coveted Best New Artist award, a moment that stood out from all the rest. Many female artists, such as Kesha and Lady Gaga, were snubbed in favour of their male counterparts. In response to the outrage , Recording Academy president Neil Portnow said in an interview with Variety:

“It has to begin with … women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls, who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, producers, and want to be part of the industry on the executive level … [They need] to step up because I think they would be welcome.”

Eesh…
