The Third Course Is Just As Delicious As The First
While the second half of the series is on hold until sometime earlier this year, there can be no denying that Food Wars’ third helping made it one of the most delicious anime of 2017. So, before Soma and company return with the much anticipated “Totsuki Train Arc”, we’ve deciding to look back and countdown the best moments from the first twelve episodes of Food Wars: The Third Plate.Â
Fair warning, there are MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!
#5: Soma vs. Kuga
We finally got a good look at the full roster of talented young chefs that made up Totsuki Academy’s Elite Ten. Needless to say they were a colourful bunch with all manner of quirks, but it was the 8th Seat that would serve as the first opponent for Soma to overcome. In a battle of Chinese cuisine, Soma and Kuga not only engaged in a week long food-scuffle, but also over the ideologies behind a restaurant.
#4: Azami Nakiri
Taking the award for modern anime’s creepiest father, Food Wars’ first real villain made quite the impact, and not only for his demonic-looking appearance. Staging a coup d’etat, Azami managed to take control of Totsuki for himself, where he starts to “purge” departments and groups of students he feels do not live up to the standards of a true chef. The fact he has such a mental lease around Erina paints him as a truly repugnant yet fascinating character.
#3: Soma vs. Tsukasa
Yet another loss for our hero, but once again serving as abuilding block to push him forward in his culinary pursuits. After challenging 1st Seat Eishi Tsukasa to a Shokugeki, Soma ends up falling short compared to the talents of the White Knight of The Table. That being said, the match was obviously enough to impact the normally untouchable Tsukasa, hinting towards a future rematch.
#2: Rindo Kobayashi
The 2nd Seat made a lot of lists for being one of 2017’s best girls, and what’s not to love? A lovely young lady with cat-features and a huge appetite, Rindo was a femme fatale in all aspects. While she has obviously taken an interest in Soma’s progress and isn’t evil by any stretch of the imagination, she nonetheless took part in the revolution that handed control of Totsuki to Azami Nakiri. We can’t wait to see her unleash her claws and display her cooking talents later down the line.
#1: Soma vs. Eizan
If there was ever a character who needed to be taken down a peg, it was the 9th Seat. Over the course of the series, the business savvy Eizan has shown he only cares for profit, leading him to fully embracing Azami Nakiri’s ideals and eagerly crush any rebellion towards Central. In order to save his dormitory from being destroyed, Soma took on Eizan in Shokugeki that he was bound to lose, since the judges had already been bribed to vote in the latter’s favour. Yet, he still managed to come out on top by letting his food do the talking! Eizan’s defeated face is a thing of beauty.
