New Professor Layton Anime To Focus On…His Daughter?

A New Generation Of Detective

Filled with engaging puzzles, beautifully animated cutscenes and a charming protagonist, the Professor Layton video game series was practically begging to be turned into an anime. Sure, he managed to get himself a feature length film back in 2009 with Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva, but surely nothing could compare to a mini-series that managed to build up an intriguing mystery over the course of several episodes.

Well, it seems fans have somewhat finally gotten their wish, since it has recently been revealed that the upcoming Layton series will actually be centred around his daughter Katrielle.

According to an article on ToonZone

How come Professor Layton starred in six games and never got his own cartoon series, while his daughter appears in one game and immediately gets her own? Who knows?

Rumors of a Layton anime have been swirling around Japan since earlier this year, but we now know they’re true. The February issue of Shogakukan‘s Ciao magazine revealed the existence of Layton Mystery Detective Agency: Kat’s Mystery-Solving Files, a new series based on the latest Layton game.

For the uninitiated, the Layton games involve a man in a top hat and his kid sidekick, who travel to various Victorian villages and solve mysteries. The latest game happened to focus on Katrielle Layton, the Professor’s daughter. It was released in English on the 3DS last fall.

Akihiro Hino, CEO of Level-5 Games (creators of the Layton series as well as Yo-Kai Watch) will serve as creative director for the TV series. A manga adaption of the anime is also planned, and Tomy will be selling Katrielle merch next year when the show debuts.

26 episodes of Layton Mystery Detective Agency are in production right now, and the series is set to premiere in the spring of 2018.

We’re sure some avid Layton addicts will be a bit annoyed that Kat managed to secure herself an anime before her dear old Dad, but we can’t deny that a series drenched in such a heartwarming animation style featuring a cunning female protagonist does sound like a joy to watch.
