Do We Control Who Lives And Dies?
Carving out our own path and feeling the weight of our choices has made up the crux of many iconic pieces of entertainment. You’ve go classic roleplays like Dungeons & Dragons, books such as the Fighting Fantasy series, and even modern video games like Until Dawn. Putting the important decisions in the hands of audiences is certainly a great way to get them invested.
Naturally, Netflix now wants a slice of this particular pie.
According to an article on Eurogamer –
A Choose Your Own Adventure Netflix show for adults? Excuse me?
It’s happening, according to Bloomberg. It has no name but it has an aim: to put you in control of the storylines you see.
Netflix does this already but in kids titles you probably overlooked. They are Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale, and Buddy Thunderstruck: The Maybe Pile. I watched Puss in Book because I was, um, researching, and the choices offered were basic, either A or B – fight a tree or fight a god, for instance (that’s an actual example). There were around a handful of them in a 23 minute show.
You use your remote or controller to make your choice, but note, “The Netflix website, Android Devices, Chromecast and Apple TV do not support interactive content at this time.” If you don’t make a selection the programme chooses for you.
Obviously details are still up in the air, but we have to wonder what the setting and choices will be. If the show is specifically aimed at adults, you can imagine that it’s going to perhaps have violent, sexual and all kind of unpleasant content.
Whatever it decides to go with, it’s up against some fierce competition. If it can’t do better than Late Shift then this project is doomed to fail.
