We can feel the emotional scars from here. If there’s one thing that a good video game knows how to do, it’s how to leave an impression. While some try to inspire tears through a moving narrative, others leave us in a crippled state of anxiety after unnerving us with their creepy content. Guess which category these ten fit into?
#10: The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth
Even if you ignore all the horrible monsters that Isaac has to face down the line, this is still a game based around the story of a crazy zealot mother trying to sacrifice her son.
#9: Eternal Darkness: Sanityâs Requiem
Get too scared and the game will turn against you, including tossing a false blue screen of death your way!
#8: Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
In terms of modern video game horror icons, the Baker Family stand about the rest. Probably something to do with Marguerite Baker and her hive crotch.
#7: Inside
Hunted down for an unknown reason, exposed to a dystopian world that has gone to the dogs; you will leave this game utterly confused and emotionally overwhelmed.
#6: Phantasmagoria
How do you make gruesome murder even more shocking? By having the whole thing in live action of course. After all, it’s just so much richer to see a demon-possessed man kill his lover by shoving gore down her throat when it involves real people.
#5: Postal
If you feel like letting loose you inner sadist, then this game will fully allow it. Even if that involves shooting up public places…
#4: This War of Mine
Delve into a tail of survival as you try to keep a group of stranger alive through the turmoil of a wartorn country. Spoiler alert, not all of them are going to make it.
#3: I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream
Don’t expect happy endings here. Even if it’s just a point and click game, we’re still forced to watch a supercomputer try to mentally break a collective of human survivors after he wiped out the rest of mankind.
#2: Silent Hill 2
You only need two words when talking about this horror classic; Pyramid Head.
#1: Manhunt 2
You won’t find scenes of a more graphic nature in all of video games. If you’re looking for creative dismemberment of the worst kind, then Manhunt has you covered.
