On January 3rd 2018, the search for the truth will resume with the premiere of season of 11 of The X-Files. Although the 2016 revival garnered mixed reviews, it was a commercial success nonetheless and its cliffhanger ending left viewers wanting more.
The showâs female lead, Gillian Anderson, has stated that this season is likely to be her final performance as Dana Scully, meaning that season 11 could mark the end for the iconic series (unless they kill off Scully, which would NOT be cool).
If this is indeed the end, here are the plotlines we need to see this season to give fans a satisfying conclusion to the show.
(Needless to say, there are spoilers ahead)
5. An Actual Alien Invasion
The arrival of an alien invasion was teased throughout the original series, but never actually came to fruition. We canât think of a more epic storyline than aliens attempting to colonize the Earth and judging by the season 10 cliffhanger, we might be getting our wish.
4. The Truth
The truth is still out there, and itâs about time we know what it is. Any X-Files fan who claims to understand the showâs overarching mythology is definitely lying, as it is famously complex, difficult to understand and often contradictory. Specifically, the show went back and forth about who the actual bad guys are. Hopefully, Season 11 can clear up sone of the confusion:
Were aliens really abducting people or were the abductions staged by the government who injected their victims with alien DNA?
Also, Scullyâs immortality has been hinted at several times throughout the show, but never explicitly mentioned or explained. Is she REALLY immortal? And does that mean William is also immortal considering he inherited her alien DNA?
3. Mulder and Scully Back Together
The relationship between Mulder and Scully is the foundation of the entire series and fans were understandably upset when the partners were not linked romantically in season 10. New footage was released this week that very briefly shows Mulder and Scully in bed together, which could either mean theyâre finally back togetherâ¦or itâs some sort of dream sequence and weâre in a for a major disappointment.
2. William
This is LONG overdue. Scullyâs decision to give William up as a baby was one of the saddest moments in the series, and a reunion between the FBI agents and their son after all these years would undoubtedly be extremely emotional for long-time fans. According to the trailer released in October, William will be featured in the new season in some capacity, and we cannot wait to see who their now-teenage son has grown up to be.
1. A Happy Ending
This one is simple: Mulder and Scully happily married, with their son William by their side, having defeated Cigarette Smoking Man once and for all. And please, no cliffhangers.
