Ooooh, That’s A Bad Way To Go…
While it wasn’t a game-changer by any means, Until Dawn’s concept and execution proved to be a breath of fresh air for players. Invoking the best of 80s horror classics, a delightful set of archetypes, some impressive motion capture and tense series of choices, this chilling experience was a real winner!
Following the tragic death of their two friends one year prior, a group of students have a reunion at a cabin atop a conveniently isolated mountain. It isn’t long before teenage drama gives way to panic when a masked murderer starts stalking to them.
Aside from its choice-based gameplay and enjoyable performances, what Until Dawn really managed to excel at was the death scenes! Every character can bite the dust in the most gruesome of ways, adding another layer of the tension as the player tries to keep (mostly) everyone alive!
In celebration of the upcoming release of the prequel, The Inpatient, we’ve decided to count down our favourite deaths that have befallen our unfortunate cast.
Fair warning, there are MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!
#5: The Twins Take A Tumble
The deaths that started it all. While its unavoidable, it was still a great way to set the tone for the tragedy to come. Trying to outrun a masked man with a flamethrower (or so we thought) twins Hannah and Beth meet their end as they fall over the side of a cliff, the journey down smashing their bodies to pieces.
#4: Matt Gets Hooked
Trying to play the white knight may get you in way more trouble than you realise should you be ill-prepare. After trying and failing to stop Emily from falling into the mines, Matt finds himself attacked by the Wendigo. If players didn’t manage to get themselves a flare gun, Matt will find himself getting stabbed through the face with a hook and strung up like a piece of meat until he succumbs to death.
#3: Emily And The Rock Crusher
Emily gets it pretty rough in this game, which in someway manages to transcend her bitchy nature and make her a sympathetic figure. While getting shot is rather gruesome, the worst by far is the time where she slipped into a rock crusher while fleeing from the Wendigo. If players aren’t quick on the draw, she falls in and gets turned into mincemeat.
#2: Ashley Is Fooled
Were you paying attention? You had better be or it might mean the end for everyone’s favourite beanie wearing teen. While looking through a journal, players are given a hint that Wendigos can imitate other people. If Ashley is fooled by this, then a Wendigo leaps out boehind a trapdoor and tears her head clean off. You only have yourself to be blame.
#1: Jessica’s Bad Night
All she wanted was a night of hot sex with her hunky boyfriend, and instead she ended up getting kidnapped and torn up by a Wendigo. If players don’t get to her in time, Jessica will get half her face ripped of before being unceremoniously dumped into a mine. If that wasn’t bad enough, even if players succeed and she survives the fall, later on the game they have to make another split-second to save her for a second time. Otherwise, you guessed it, her face gets mauled.
