Sequel To Live-Action Gintama Film Set For 2018

We’re sure no one was as surprised as Gintoki when they discovered his live-action movie didn’t just do well, but in places like China proved to be a cinematic beast! Throw in the success of the currently airing Gintama: Popori-hen anime not to mention an upcoming video game, and its fair to say that the White Demon is standing at the pinnacle of success!

Then, just when you thought things couldn’t be going better for Odd Jobs Gin, a sequel to said live-action movie has been announced and set for release next year!

Director YÅ«ichi Fukuda and actor Shun Oguri revealed during an event on Thursday that the live-action film of Hideaki Sorachi‘s Gintama manga will get a second film tentatively titled Gintama Part 2, and it is slated to open during the 2018 summer vacation.

Fukuda and Oguri revealed the new film during an event for the launch of the first film’s Blu-ray Disc and DVD home video release at the UDX Theater in Tokyo.

The first film opened in Japan on July 14, and it earned 980 million yen (US$8.9 million) in its first four days. The film also inspired a live-action net show that debuted on Docomo’s dTV streaming service on July 15, one day after the film’s opening. The film already had its Canadian premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival in July, and it will also screen in the United States, Canada, Germany, Spain, and Central and South America.

Sorachi began the manga in 2004 and it continues to be ranked among the top-selling manga in Japan. The manga has more than 50 million copies in print in Japan. Viz Media published the first 23 volumes in English. Shueisha published the manga’s 70th volume on October 4. The manga entered its final arc in July 2016.
