Total War Franchise Is Getting A Spin-Off

The Strategy Empire Is Expanding

The Total War series has had its fair share of hits and misses. The developers have given us a few buggy abominations over the years, but they have also blessed us with gems like their latest ventures into the Warhammer universe. With such triumphs under their belts, it seems that Creative Assembly is eager to spread their wings and try something a little different with their beloved franchise.

According to an article on Polygon

Earlier this year, Total War developer The Creative Assembly announced plans to create a spin-off series of its historical strategy games. The goal for that new brand of Total War game is to focus on “exciting pivotal moments in history rather than whole historical eras,” the developer said.

The first of those titles, Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia, has been revealed.

Thrones of Britannia, which is coming to PC in 2018, will explore the aftermath of the Viking Invasion of Britain. Here’s the game’s official description:

It is 878 AD, and the Viking Invasion of Britain is over. The Norse warlords are firmly established, but the ambitious kings of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales have aspirations of their own – not least the great King Alfred of Wessex. Britannia is a furnace of possibilities, from which the template for modern Britain will be forged, across the most detailed Total War campaign map ever made.

Total War series director Mike Simpson said the Total War Saga games will explore “key flashpoints at distinct places and times in history.”

“Unlike our era-spanning titles, we’re putting defined geographical areas under the microscope, building super-detailed campaign maps with a strong cultural focus and flavour that players can dive into,” Simpson said in a news release. “This will complement our broader-scope titles perfectly.”

Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia now has a page on Steam, but there’s not much more to it, other than an expanded description. Here it is:

The year is 878 AD, the embattled English king Alfred the Great has mounted a heroic defence at the battle of Edington, and blunted the Viking invasion. Chastened – but not yet broken – the Norse warlords have settled across Britain. For the first time in nearly 80 years, the land is in a fragile state of peace.

Throughout this sceptred isle, the kings of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales sense a time of change approaching; a time of opportunity. There will be treaties. There will be war. There will be turns of fortune that become the stuff of legend, in a saga that charts the ascent of one of history’s greatest nations.

Kings will rise. One will rule.

Things are about to get medieval.
