Bow Before The Might Of Nazarick
You might think anime centered around video games would be something of a niche avenue, but over the years so many series under its banner have been released that its quickly catching up on the fantasy/anime and ecchi genres. Many have found a devoted fanbase, while others have proven themselves to be stale or just lacking in substance.
And then there’s Overlord.
As a high-ranking player addicted to the virtual reality world of Yggdrasil, Momonga is saddened to see the game finally come to end. There’s just one problem. He can’t eject himself from the game. It soon becomes clear that he has become trapped both inside his avatar and this dangerous new world. What’s a guy to do? Try to conquer it of course! With near infinite power and the support of a variety of colorful NPCS, Momonga sets out to rule the land as the skeletal magic caster known as Ainz Ooal Gown.
With its unique approach to both the genre and the handling of its protagonist, Overlord easily won over fans, and with the announcement of a second season, we decided to count down what we believe to be the series’ top five most memorable moments.
Fair warning, there are MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!
#5: Hamsuke
Do we have to explain this one? It’s a giant talking hamster that Ainz rides around like a steed. It’s magnificent.
#4: Angel Massacre
In order to defend the likes of a small village (and test out his strength) Ainz takes on the soldiers and summons of the Slane Theocracy. In spite of their numbers, he is easily able to wipe them all out with minimal effort. As a result, we get our first taste of just how OP the Supreme One really is.
#3: Albedo
We can’t really pick one moment, so we’re just going to say Albedo in general. The most powerful of the Floor Guardians as well as the devoted “lover” of Ainz, this winged demoness will make you laugh your ass off with her possessiveness as well as put a smile on your face with her honest affections. Who else do you know that has a full body pillow of their partner?
#2: The Death of Clementine
A sadistic killer who had her wicked way with some of Ainz’s human companions, the undead lord gets revenge against her in the sweetest way possible when he slowly crushes her to death. It’s brutal and it some ways hard to watch, but after seeing what she did to the likes of innocent female mage Ninya…yeah, she totally deserved it.
#1: Ainz Ooal Gown vs. Shalltear Bloodfallen
After one of his Floor Guardians is brainwashed, Ainz has no choice but to battle her one on one. The resulting clash turns out to be ridiculously entertaining and a great reflection of the genre. Spell after spell is dished out (including a Sharknado) and even the likes of cash-shop items are used. We couldn’t think of a better way for the first season to end on!
