Odd Jobs Gin Is A Hugh Hit Overseas
As an anime, Gintama has continued to reach new heights with its various adaptations over the years, blending together zany comedy and some truly breathtaking fight scenes. So much that that a brand new season has been announced for October under the name of Gintama: Porori Arc.
While we are all excited to see Gintoki and the others return for more crazy adventures, it turns out that the manga was recently turned into a live actions movie. Oddly enough, China seems to have taken to it quite fondly.
We’re not joking, it had a bigger opening than Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name.
According to an article on Crunchyroll –
As reported, the live-action film adaptation of Hideaki Sorachi’s action comedy manga Gintama opened in over 8,000 theaters with 16,637 screens in the mainland China on September 1. It was the largest scale release for a Japanese film in the Chinese cinema history, surpassing the previous record of 7,000 theaters hold by Makoto Shinkai’s anime film Kimi no Na wa./Your Name. in December 2016.
According to the film’s official Twitter and Animate Times, it earned a massive 1,000,666,800 yen (about 9.1 million US dollars) on 1,955,700 admissions in its first three days, which was the biggest opening record for a Japanese live-action film.
In its home country Japan, Gintama has earned an impressive 3.7 billion yen and has become the top-grossing live-action Japanese film of this year. It has already been released in Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam, and Hong Kong, and is scheduled to get theatrical run soon in Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, the US, Canada, Germany, Spain, Australia, New Zealand, and the middle-South American countries.
Maybe Gin and company have managed to do the impossible and made an amazing live-action adaptation of a manga? If anyone’s capable of doing it, it would be the White Demon.
