If Alicia Vikander isn’t already a household name, her part in the 2018 reboot of “Tomb Raider” will certainly help. For her role as Lara Croft, Vikander had to whip her fit bod into even better shape. Working with trainer Magnus Lygdback, she managed to pack on 16 pounds of muscle by working out seven days a week and eliminating sugar and other high GI foods from her diet. But hey, you’ve gotta put in the work if you want to see end results like that!

She may now be an Oscar winning actress, but Alicia Vikander actually got her start in a big way as well. She grew up in the city of Gothenburg in Sweden, and as a child she played parts in productions of the Gothenburg Opera, showing talent from a very young age. Her mother, Maria Fahl Vikander, worked as a stage actress, so we can see where Alicia got her skills from! When she was just seven, she snagged a role in Kristina från Duvemåla, and kept it for over three years. She also worked on “The Sound of Music” and “Les Misérables.”

Perhaps ironically since she ended up becoming best known for her part in a film called “The Danish Girl,” Vikander actually had to learn to speak Danish for another major role. When the producers of “En Kongelig Affære,” a Danish language film known in English as “A Royal Affair,” were looking for their female lead, they had trouble finding the right girl for the part. Eventually they discovered Vikander, but the problem was - she didn’t speak Danish. With only a couple of months before filming was set to start, she managed to learn the language well enough to perform all her lines.

During the time that she was working for the Gothenburg Opera, Vikander decided to pick up another performance skill: ballet. When she was nine years old, she began to train with the Svenska Balettskolan i Göteborg and eventually the Royal Swedish Ballet School when she moved to Stockholm at the age of fifteen to pursue dance. She even travelled to New York to practice at the School of American Ballet. Because of injuries she sustained, however, she had to bring an end to her dance career in her late teens.
