#20: Nick Gordon's Meltdown

TV and pop star Bobbi Kristina Brown was in a coma when her boyfriend Nick Gordon sat down with Dr. Phil in March 2015. The interview turned out to be an intervention. Gordon's mother Michele arrives to guide him through an intensely emotional discussion about his substance use disorder and perceived role in Brown’s condition. He seems inebriated even during this chat, which nearly comes to an end when Gordon storms off to another room. It was a heartbreaking outburst by the reality TV star that took the then-hopeful turn of him returning with the promise to go into rehab. Brown passed away that July, and Gordon succumbed to an overdose almost five years later.

#19: Adoption Imposter

In 2020, Gabryele Watson stood accused of emotionally manipulating as many as 300 couples by falsely promising them babies for adoption. “Dr. Phil” seats Julio and Lauren across from the so-called “Adoption Imposter” with civil expressions of heartbreak over being denied the promise of a child. Gabby alternates between tearful apologies and claims of health issues behind her bizarre vice of exploiting people. As Phil presses whether she’ll stop contacting families for good, the tension drives her out of the studio. The host and the victims being left to process the chaos underscores the depth of Gabby’s manipulation tactics. She would be sentenced to nearly two years in prison for aggressive cyberstalking in 2026.

#18: Handsome Devil

Twenty-two-year-old Brandon should be the pride of his parents Julie and Paul, who boast about his good looks, charm and intelligence. They also describe him as a “devil-problem child.” By 2016, he had had regular run-ins with the law, allegedly threatened to kill his parents on a daily basis, and was in and out of psychiatric hospitals. This has been going on since Brandon was 10 years old. His antisocial behavior is evident in him aggressively blaming his parents and dismissing treatment. He then walks out of the interview after declaring it pointless. The stunned Julie, Paul and Phil are thus left to discuss among themselves the next steps in ensuring boundaries and safety.

#17: Lynsey & Daniel’s Custody Battle

A 2016 two-parter delivers on the second episode’s title “Mom Vs. Dad: Why Lynsey Storms Off.” Daniel and Lynsey are locked in a bitter custody battle over their four-year-old daughter, with the latter accusing her ex of serious abuse. Daniel says that the court supported his claim that Lynsey was coaching the girl through these allegations. Between his parents arriving in support and Phil offering polygraph tests, the overwhelmed Lynsey storms off. She returns to concede that Daniel is likely innocent, but that she doesn’t regret reporting him, before leaving again. She revealed in a follow-up that she lost full custody to Daniel, who later claimed in his own follow-up that Lynsey was out of their daughter’s life.

#16: Krissy in an Uncomfortable Environment

Monique and Sunjay brought their 23-year-old daughter to “Dr. Phil” in 2019, saying that she’s homeless and couch-surfing with strangers met online. Krissy also allegedly hasn’t bathed in three years, and is hoarding clumps of hair. Sunjay adds that she suffers fits of rage and went to jail for stabbing him. She's expressly uncomfortable with his presence, getting into arguments over her safety and hygiene until she calls the whole process “a joke.” She then leaves the studio, only to return shortly afterward to admit that her lifestyle has to change. A little over a year later, Krissy and her family came back to “Dr. Phil” to report that she’s been making great progress.

#15: In the Name of Love or Obsession

Chloe appeared in 2010 as a teenager said to be excessively infatuated with her boyfriend Dusty. She doesn’t think it’s a big deal that she steals money to make up for giving him her paychecks. And she voices disdain for her mom and stepdad for not giving Dusty a chance. Her departure during the interview apparently clinched her distinction as one of the most difficult guests Phil has ever had. He invited Chloe to a follow-up episode about such guests, where she reported moving in with her father and dropping out of college to work in a factory. She also broke up with Dusty, but he appears to reveal that she’s still obsessed with him.

#14: Sisterly Scolding

Rebecca faces her sisters Caitlin and Jennifer in a 2022 episode about medication abuse. This reportedly led to her becoming homeless and jobless, going to jail five times, and losing custody of her daughter. Still, Rebecca insists that she doesn't have a problem because all of her meds are legally prescribed. That is, after she does some “doctor shopping.” Phil and company grill her on this until she finally barges off in complete denial. She forces the camera crew out of her dressing room while her sisters discuss the lethal risks of her condition with Dr. Charles Sophy. “Dr. Phil” would not have a family follow-up to address what became of Rebecca and her sisters.

#13: “Truthfully” Trisha

YouTube personality Patricia Kirley, known online as “Truthfully Trisha,” appeared on “Dr. Phil” in 2017 for the very thing that made her famous. Her then-husband Sean says that their marriage has been consumed by her obsessive live-streaming and online drama, which included leaking people's information. Heated confrontations with a hater and the audience lead to Trisha walking off of the stage, then fainting. Whether this is just a stunt, Sean is deeply upset with people laughing about the situation. Trisha finishes the interview after medics find that she's okay. Trish would even turn this viral moment into content, sparking debate about the legitimacy of her behavior and the toxicity of her brand.

#12: Chasing Jael Strauss

This “America’s Next Top Model” finalist was just beginning her public downward spiral in 2012. When Jael Strauss appeared on “Dr. Phil,” her family said that she had been using substances for years, and was homeless. Confronted about her stealing and enabling friends, including one who died of an overdose, Jael storms off the stage through the back. Phil considers the stakes too high to continue without her. So cameras follow him going into the parking lot to sit down with Jael and offer to put her up in rehab. She did achieve sobriety, but would publicly accuse Phil of exploiting her and others’ conditions for profit. Jael became a devoted recovery advocate until her death from cancer in 2018.

#11: Walking Runs in the Family

The Stehls became the first “Dr. Phil Family” in 2003. Martin and Erin need all the help they can get when their divorce proceedings are complicated by their daughter Alexandra getting pregnant. The drama escalates to where the teenager storms out of the interview. Her sister Katherine did the same in a 2009 follow-up. Critics consider their arc to be the point when “Dr. Phil” transitioned from a legitimate health talk show to trash TV. The Stehls were recurring guests, with Phil asserting that he would not tolerate further outbursts. He chronicled the family’s progress to relative stability and brokered a reconciliation between Alexandra and Katherine. Their parents had also reconciled, staying married until Martin’s passing in 2025.

#10: Kim Richards

Back in 2015, actress and “Real Housewives” star Kim Richards appeared on “Dr. Phil” to discuss her struggles with alcohol and a recent arrest for assaulting a police officer. They begin to discuss a possible treatment, but Kim proves more stubborn than anticipated. She says that she wants to be in rehab no longer than 30 days – despite her daughter’s insistence that she do 60 – and that she wants to remain close to home. When Phil continues to push the matter of her treatment, Kim grows anxious and promptly leaves, leaving Phil and her children to sit in an awkward silence. Sadly, Kim was arrested again the following August for shoplifting at Target.

#9: Raging Mom

Mothers can be difficult, but is your mother bad enough to bring on “Dr. Phil?” Seventeen-year-old Summer certainly thinks so, as she brings her “raging lunatic” of a mother onto the show. According to Summer, her mother Susan screams at her children, stabs paintings and mattresses, and even physically abuses her husband Peter. Summer and her sister Amber have even turned to drugs to escape their hostile domestic life. When Phil confronts Susan about her anger, Susan tells him that she “doesn’t need this” and promptly leaves the stage, leaving an unperturbed Phil to continue the discussion with Peter and Summer. Considering her treatment of her family, it sounds like she let Phil off easy.

#8: Sandra’s Custody Battle

A woman named Linda called Dr. Phil to help her with her neighbors Sandra and Joey, who are in the midst of a bitter custody battle. Linda is concerned that their children have been caught in the middle. While Sandra is on stage defending herself, Phil states that he’s going to bring out Linda. This causes Sandra to panic, and she states that she will leave the stage if Linda is brought out. She and Phil get into quite a heated argument before Sandra gets up and walks out, just as she said she would. And with that, Sandra waived her right to tell her side of the story. It can be tough getting along with your neighbors, but this is really next level.

#7: “I’ll Get Up and Leave Right Now”

In this episode, Anthony brings his brother Jamie onto the show to discuss his dangerous use of steroids, alcohol and other substances. However, Jamie isn’t really having any of it. After being confronted by Dr. Phil about his persistent lying, Jaime states that he’ll “get up and leave right now.” And wouldn’t you know it – that’s exactly what he does! Regardless of his absence, Phil continues discussing Jamie’s problem with his family, even going so far as to sit in Jamie’s now-vacated chair. Turns out, Phil has little patience with stubborn people who lie directly to his face.

#6: GPS Tracking

Guest Sarah is accused of being a negligent mother. The courts had previously found her unfit to raise her two-year-old daughter, and now Sarah’s family is doing everything they can to protect the young child from her mother’s negative influence, including planting a GPS on Sarah’s car to observe her day-to-day activities. Surprise-surprise, things get a little dicey once this juicy piece of information is brought into the conversation. Sarah’s family gets into an enormous fight with her before she suddenly stands up and walks off stage while fake-laughing and calling the process “a joke.” To be fair, that’s not the sort of revelation anybody wants to hear on national television, regardless of the context.

#5: Rejecting Therapy

Fifteen-year-old Madison is a prickly guest. She originally appeared on the show as a result of her reckless behavior, which included stealing her mother’s car upwards of 30 times and crashing said car during a high-speed chase involving drugs and a weapon. She had also been charged on four separate occasions for assaulting her own father. In the original episode, Madison walked off stage after learning that her grandmother would be appearing on the show. Madison then re-appeared to discuss the corrupting influence she has on her younger sister, and Phil recommended a residential therapy program for the troublesome teen. However, this only caused Madison to burst into tears before leaving the stage yet again in pain and frustration.

#4: Confronting Kami

Kami’s family desperately wants to help her. While they say she was once a perfectly normal and healthy suburban mother, she has been driven by substance use to homelessness and 12 arrests. While her family shows sympathy, they also threaten to cut her off if she doesn’t get the help she so clearly needs. Unfortunately, Kami begins to cry during an expository video and quickly storms off stage, despite an attempt to physically restrain her. She then sobs backstage while dodging what looks to be a producer before leaving the building entirely. It’s heartbreaking to witness, and it harshly showcases the powerful and detrimental influence of drugs. This video is arguably more effective than most anti-drug PSAs.

#3: Amie’s Fake Pregnancies

Pregnancy is typically not something to joke about, and it’s really not something to fake. But that hasn’t stopped Amie. Amie’s friend Courtney claims that Amie has faked three separate pregnancies and has even gone so far as to send pictures of so-called stillborn twins to one of the alleged fathers. While watching a video of Courtney accusing her of taking illegal donations, Amie storms off the stage in what is perhaps the most authoritative and threatening speed-walk we’ve ever seen. And while Phil cracks jokes, Amie has a total meltdown backstage by swearing at producers, throwing various items, and even pushing the cameraman. So, needless to say, she wasn’t very happy with the accusations.

#2: Time-Out

This is yet another story of faked pregnancies and wicked deceptions. The guest is Brittany, who has been accused of harassing men and faking both pregnancies and infant deaths. Once Phil mentions that he has an email from one of Brittany’s friends, Brittany grows visibly distressed and quickly calls for a “time out,” clearly afraid of what the critical email will contain. Phil rejects her time out and accuses her of withholding pertinent information, causing her to walk off stage. Phil can only sigh in disappointment as he watches her leave. And things seemed to be going so well, too!

#1: Nicholas Brendon

Best known for his role as Xander in “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” actor Nicholas Brendon, also struggled with dependency on alcohol and sleeping pills, which led to numerous arrests. In August of 2015, just a few months after he was arrested for trashing a hotel room, Nicholas appeared on “Dr. Phil” to discuss his issues. However, the interview quickly turned sour, and Nicholas grew frustrated with Phil’s line of questioning. The last straw came when Phil accused him of being intoxicated. Nicholas then walked off stage. It’s a horribly sad moment, but Nicholas later returned to the show to accept Phil’s offer of a rehabilitation program. He reportedly struggled to maintain sobriety until his passing in 2026.
