In most cases, wearing a gorgeous gold gown from a respected designer like Gucci would be a red carpet slam dunk. However, the styling of said dress can take it from hot to not – and Kim Kardashian is the ultimate example. Rather than add an accessory to complement the form-fitting, unhemmed garment, the reality star opted for a set of ice blue contacts and eight-inch Pleaser heels. Her shoe choice came back to haunt her, with her taking a tumble into a bush before she even arrived at the elite afterparty. Her brunette locks seemed more messy than tousled, and wearing it down with no styling certainly didn’t help. Overall, the vision may have been there, but she couldn’t quite see it through.

For many fashion girlies, the Met Gala is their Olympics. Everyone wants to serve a memorable look, but one wrong move and you end up in meme territory. That was unfortunately the case for Karlie Kloss. The theme was centered around celebrating costume art, which the model attempted with a white Dior gown. It featured a sculpted silhouette with a rounded bottom, which did help elevate the somewhat basic garment. Unfortunately, that exact feature became the exact target for several critics online. People from all over took to the web to make their pointed opinions known. Her couture dress was compared to everything from different kinds of food to body parts. After seeing it for ourselves, it’s hard to say we disagree with their consensus.

Go girl, give us nothing. While there’s certainly nothing wrong with wanting to keep things a bit laid back for a country music awards show, it felt like Keith Urban just grabbed whatever clothes he saw first. The hit musician took to the red carpet in a grey t-shirt, baggy white pants, and sneakers. Had he just committed to the casual vibe, then the outfit might have been salvaged. All hope of that left when he bizarrely decided to spruce it up with a light grey blazer, which felt largely out-of-place compared to the rest of the outfit. He looked less like someone there to present an award, and more like a stranger who happened to wander in from off the street.

Sometimes,just one too many elements takes a look from iconic to a complete miss. Leighton Meester learned that the hard way after arriving at the Golden Globes in a Miu Miu gown. The designer dress was originally light pink, which became nearly impossible to tell thanks to the countless amounts of silver embellishments applied to it. Besides the base becoming muddied, the random yellow chest piece did nothing but add another contrasting color to the mix. Her fresh-faced makeup was the one saving grace, as it helped balance out the more extreme aspects of her outfit. It seemed like it was aiming for avant garde, but blew off course somewhere along the way and missed entirely.

Some looks are so questionable that it’s hard not to wonder if the designer was setting up the celebrity wearing their clothes. Take Priyanka Chopra Jonas at the Vanity Fair Oscars Party, for instance. The actress, who’d been dressed by Stella McCartney, arrived in a beautiful metallic gown… which had been adorned with a jarring faux-fur trim. The thick fabric clashed heavily with the base piece, and the contrast was made worse with a matching stole. The final result was her being seemingly swallowed up by the extra material. The attempt at elevating a simple, yet classic silhouette ended up having the opposite effect. It goes without saying that sometimes, less is more – and unfortunately, Priyanka learned that firsthand.

Some rules are there for a reason. When it comes to the Cannes Film Festival, the dress code is fairly simple: black-tie attire. You’d think that would be a fairly easy metric to follow — but Tyrese Gibson was clearly feeling a little rebellious. Rather than a classic suit and tie, the actor went for a button-up shirt, blazer, and a pair of lightwash jeans. The different pieces clashed significantly. It felt like an odd mix of casual and professional elements, especially with the pants having some strategically-placed rips. They weren’t the only things distressed that night. The staff reportedly called him out on his faux pas after he arrived. Luckily, he was able to stay, but he was one wrong move from being excluded entirely.

#4: Sarah Pidgeon

When you’re hired to play a minimalist icon like Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, that unfortunately comes with expectations of carrying on that legacy. Sarah Pidgeon tried her best to recreate that vibe at the Actor Awards, but unfortunately, she fell short. She arrived at the event in a light pink double-balloon dress, which she then kept even more simple with an updo and minimal accessories. That choice made an already plain garment even more lifeless. The gown somehow had no silhouette whatsoever, which made her appear shapeless. There was nothing truly eye-catching about the piece, despite it being an attempt at maximalist fashion. All she had to complement it was her face card, and while it was lethal, it wasn’t enough to save this look.

#3: Hudson Williams

All the pieces were there, but they couldn’t quite fit together. To Hudson Williams’ credit, he did think outside the box for his debut at the Met Gala. However, his fashion-forward intentions didn’t quite stick the landing. He arrived in a powder blue matador-inspired suit, opting to go bare beneath the jacket. A long, black train was added for dramatic flair, and that was all topped off with intense eyeshadow. While it was exciting in concept, several details caused it to flop in execution. The pants not being fitted caused the train to look awkward, and the makeup seemed completely out-of-place compared to the rest of the outfit. It proved that it takes more than bold pieces alone to be a style icon.

Hudson isn’t the only one who fell victim to stand-out pieces being paired with poor styling. For the 2026 Met Gala, Lena Dunham went full-out. She immediately turned heads with her bright red gown, which served showgirl vibes in the worst way possible. The dress was covered in sparkles and feathers, which gave it an overall gaudy feel. It also swallowed her frame, which made it difficult to truly enjoy. She attempted to recreate a 17th century artwork depicting a grisly execution, but the garment was so over-the-top that it lessened the impact. Had it been pared down, then it could’ve been one of the most striking looks of the night. Instead, it just came across as a huge swing and an even bigger miss.

There’s nothing wrong with trying a new look. However, debuting it at one of the most prestigious events in the movie industry probably isn’t the best call. That didn’t stop Lisa Rinna from arriving in a jaw-dropping ensemble, which consisted of a bleach-blonde blowout and a bright rainbow gown. As if the colors alone weren’t enough to grab everyone’s attention, it was made even more jarring with the realization that it was made out of tinsel. It was certainly bold, but it unfortunately wasn’t the fashion statement she was hoping for. The combination of textures and hues made it more camp than avant garde, which would’ve been perfect at virtually any other event. At Cannes, however, it just looked strikingly out of place.
