This classic time travel flick predicted some major technological innovations, including advancements in the world of cosmetic surgery. Doc brags to Marty about his visit to a skin rejuvenation clinic, where he received treatments such as a hair repair, and a change of blood that would add decades to his life. While cosmetic surgery has made huge advancements since 1985 in the form of botox, hair plugs, and other methods that can make someone appear decades younger, a “change of blood” at this point is more of an emergency life-saving procedure, as opposed to the anti-aging technique proposed in the film.

As Marty walks through future Hill Valley on his way to the Cafe 80s, he stops to take in the view. While gazing, Marty stands in front of the Holomax movie theatre, where he is suddenly attacked by a shark. To Marty’s surprise, the shark is a hologram coming out of an ad for “Jaws 19,” directed by Max Spielberg. Of course Max Spielberg didn’t follow in his father Steven’s footsteps, and the “Jaws” series stopped at four movies. That’s probably for the best, but we’d still love to see more 3D hologram billboards.

Everyone may have pretty reliable weather apps on their phones these days, but they are nothing compared to the second by second updates that exist in Marty and Doc’s 2015. Upon first arriving in the future, the DeLorean is caught in a torrential downpour. As Doc lands, Marty protests going out into the rain, but Doc assures him that the storm will soon be over and simply looks down at his watch and counts down the seconds until it lets up. Unfortunately, we still haven’t reached this perfected level of accuracy on something as unpredictable as the weather.

Medicine is always advancing, but the real future hasn’t quite caught up with the contraption that George is suspended from when he enters the McFly home. According to the film, George needs this machine after throwing his back out playing golf, but it can be assumed that the real motive behind the dangling George McFly is to help mask the fact that Crispin Glover did not return to play the character. Apparently, in this version of the future, the remedy for a bad back is to be hung upside-down in traction from some kind of floating machine. Sounds like more fun than physio!

Forget 30 minutes or less; the McFly’s get their pizza in 30 seconds or less. Thanks to their Black & Decker Hydrator, Lorraine pops a silver dollar sized pizza in, and pulls out a full-sized pie big enough to feed the whole family almost instantly. But it’s not just fast food that the film predicted would speed up. The McFlys also own a voice activated, retractable, in-home Garden Center that supplies them with fruit and vegetables upon request. The future of food was pretty sweet for the McFlys, but for now we still have to order in for our Pizza Hut.

This one is actually only a near miss. Fingerprint keys are certainly used in office buildings, private homes, and even on phones, but the universality of thumbprints predicted in “Back to the Future Part II” is still yet to be realized. Old man Biff uses his thumbprint to pay for the cab he uses to follow Marty and Doc. The police officers that find a sleeping Jennifer use her thumbprint to ID her. And upon entering her future home, Jennifer is shocked to find a thumbprint reader instead of a doorknob. Given the rapidly increasing move to digital technology from analog, it’s not so farfetched to think that this one is on its way.

Nike actually did release a limited edition pair of Marty’s sneakers with power laces in 2016. They were originally released in conjunction with the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which raises money to find a cure for Parkinson’s disease. The shoes were available through a digital draw system entered with a $10 donation. All the kids might be wearing them in the fictional future, but in the real world a pair of these went for thousands at auctions. Hopefully, Nike will release a pair that is widely available in the near future, but until then, if you want a pair, go back in time and put some money on the Cubbies to win the World Series.

Another item of future fashion still unachieved is Marty’s jacket. When he first puts on the jacket, it’s far too big for him, but after a moment, it quickly adjusts to fit him perfectly. During a confrontation, Marty jumps into a fountain to avoid the swing of Griff’s baseball bat. He emerges completely drenched, but with the push of a button, Marty’s jacket dries itself. While a few working replicas of this jacket have been made, they are sadly not yet a staple of our fashion.

As if it wasn’t awesome enough that Doc made the DeLorean into a time machine, he also makes it fly thanks to some future tech, AND is able to go green with the Mr. Fusion, which turns garbage into fuel. Flying cars are the standard form of transportation in the future. Just bring in your old regular car to Goldie Wilson III’s Hover Conversions and get it rigged for flight. While a few highly experimental versions of flying cars have been invented, “Back to the Future Part II” predicted that by now everyone would have them. Looks like we’re stuck on the ground for now. Who didn’t want a hoverboard after watching this movie? Hover technology is big in the future. So big, in fact, that it’s even used in children’s toys. As Marty flees from Griff, he borrows a little kid’s hoverboard and relies on his old school skateboarding skills to escape. Ever since this film first premiered, there has been an outcry from diehard fans for the real deal, and those Hoverboard scooters definitely don’t count. A few companies actually have developed a form of real hoverboard technology. So hopefully, we won’t have to wait too much longer. The only question then will be Mattel, or Pit Bull?
