#10: “Fortune Street” (1991-2017)

Dragon Quest x Super Mario x Final Fantasy

Top 10 Games Where You Fight a Freakin' Dragon!

Do you know what Slime from Dragon Quest, Super Mario and Lightning from Final Fantasy all have in common? They love making money! In a game, players can roam around the board, buying property and stocks, hoping to make more money than their opponent, similar to Monopoly. Over time, the originally titled Itadaki Street started being developed by Square-Enix, allowing them to make a special release featuring characters from both Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. This opened the game up to a new audience, where they eventually brought the iconic plumper and his friends to the mix. While Nintendo is no stranger to party games, it’s still surreal seeing all these characters attempt to get rich through the financial market.

#9: “Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring” (1998)

“Final Fantasy 7” x “Ehrgeiz”

Also in:

The HARDEST Boss In Every Final Fantasy Game

Final Fantasy 7 was one of the most expensive to make and best selling games of all time on the original PlayStation, which is why having iconic characters show up in an obscure fighting game is just so baffling! Developed by DreamFactory, the 3D fighting was initially released a year after FF7 in arcades, with Cloud and Tifa as playable characters. It was then re-released later on Playstation with Sephiroth, Yuffie, Vincent and Zack added to the roster. The game was a joint venture between Square and Namco, and was a success in Japan, but that still doesn’t alleviate how weird the inclusion of these characters are.

#8: “Pokemon Conquest” (2012)

10 Pokemon Theories That Might Actually Be True

Combine a War-Based strategy game set in feudal Japan with cuddly creatures, and you’ve got yourself a confusing, yet critically applauded DS game. You play as a local warlord conquering other kingdoms and recruiting more warriors and their Pokemon to unite the Ransei region. It’s not as bloody and realistic as Nobunaga’s Ambition, but the result is a surreal combination of Samurai, cute monsters, turn based combat and layered strategy. While this crossover may have been the last to come to mind with either series, it definitely led to a memorable project worth checking out.

#7: “Sonic and Mario at the Olympic Games” series (2007-20)

The 10 WEIRDEST Sonic Games

Sonic The Hedgehog x Super Mario

The Truth Behind the Sonic 06 Failure

The strangest thing about this game is seeing Bowser outrun the fastest Hedgehog alive! Here Sega and Nintendo joined forces, creating the first official video game for the Summer Olympics and official crossover of the two gaming legends. The player can pick between a variety of characters from both franchises and attempt to win at sporting events. As a result, the actual capabilities of these characters are thrown out the window. Anyone familiar the blue blur knows he doesn’t like to swim, yet here he is doing the 100m freestyle! The game proved successful in generating interest with young people in the Olympics, but this definitely wasn’t the platform anyone expected these icons to meet in.

#6: “Poker Night at the Inventory” (2010-13)

A mercenary, a freelance cop, a wrestler and a writer walk into a bar. If you’re waiting for a punchline, there are plenty in these TellTale games. Before the studio had it’s breakout series in the form of The Walking Dead, this studio had a stint at card games. Specifically ones featuring famous video game characters. While you gambled, the player was privy to conversations between those sitting opposite, and the results of the back and forth banter was surreal and hilarious. After Heavy, Super Bad, Tycho and Max were done, TellTale released a sequel featuring Brock Samson, Claptrap, Ash Williams, Sam and Glados.

#5: “Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle” (2017)

Why This Is the Best Mario Level Ever. Period.

Super Mario x Raving Rabbids

Super Mario Bros. Trivia

I’m sure our favourite plumber found this crossover just as confusing as we did! As a young inventor tries to solve the world’s energy crisis, the crazy Rabbids get a hand on her invention, fuse themselves with mario items and then travel to the Mushroom Kingdom through a washing machine. Hence, chaos ensues. Mario and gang team up with their Rabbid counterparts to defeat the corrupted rabbids in a fun and well-received strategy game. Both of these franchises have plenty of party games in common, which makes the collaboration all the weirder, but also all the better for it.

#4: “LEGO Dimensions” (2015)

LEGO is no stranger to weird collaborations, just like with the strange LEGO RockBand. But we’re sure when you were a kid, you made up your own imaginative stories if you got your hands on two universally separate characters. Well, developers Traveller’s Tales took the fantasy and made it a reality. Similar in gameplay to other Lego action-adventure games, you venture across worlds from the vast Lego Library, including Lord of the Rings, The Simpsons, The DC Universe, Scooby Doo, the list goes on! But seeing the interactions in this crossover is a whole new level of bizarre, and something that any fan can geek out about.

#3: “Tatsunoko Vs Capcom: Ultimate All Stars” (2008)

Capcom x Tatsunoko Anime Productions

Also in:

Top 10 Capcom Franchises

Capcom has a history of collaborating with other IPs to make unique fighting video games. Some have seen great success like the Marvel Vs. Capcom series or have even tugged at our nostalgia by featuring characters in Power Rangers: Legacy Wars! But making a game specifically with one anime production company may be getting a bit too specific. We see characters like Mega Man, Ryu and Viewtiful Joe face off against Joe the Condor, Doronjo, Ken the Eagle and more! Most of these classic anime are renowned in Japan, but not that known in the West, which makes it even more confusing why it got a English release, even more so on the Wii. Regardless, the game received critical praise for it’s gameplay and presentation.

#2: “Super Smash Bros.” series (1999-2018)

The Biggest Video Game Crossovers Ever

Whenever Nintendo showed us Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Mario and Pikachu skipping through a sunflower field just to start kicking each other’s teeth in, it was understandably surprising. Children’s game characters coming together to beat the crap out of each other was a weird concept from the start. Little did we know just how weird it would get. As the series continued, Super Smash Bros would continue to add characters with each release, eventually resulting in cross company collaborations. This resulted in some of the strangest match-ups we’ve ever seen. From Sonic, Kirby, Joker, Sephiroth, Banjo Kazooie, Duck Hunt, all the way to Minecraft Steve. And yet, it’s become one of the most beloved video game franchises out there! Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions.

Nicktoons x Major League Baseball, “Nicktoons MLB” (2011)

Spongebob, Jimmy Neutron and Aang All Share the Same Baseplate

Also in:

Times SpongeBob Infiltrated Video Games

Ape Escape x Metal Gear Solid, “Metal Gear Solid 3” (2004)

A Crossover Minigame of Hide and Seek That’s Even More Confusing Than The Phantom Pain

Namco x Capcom x Sega x Nintendo, “Project X Zone” (2012-15)

A Tactical Role-Playing Game with Insane Team Ups

#1: “Kingdom Hearts” (2002-20)

The Best Kingdom Hearts Cameos!

Disney x Square Enix

Top 10 Disney Video Games

The Final Fantasy series of games tend to be fairly dramatic, which is why melding sword wielding warriors and the House of Mouse is completely out of left field, but turned out to be hugely successful. You play as Sora, accompanied by Donald and Goofy as they travel to different Disney worlds and battle The Heartless. Seeing these child friendly characters be caught in grandiose stories about Light Versus Darkness would throw any newcomer. With drastically different designs, some worlds even play out like fan-fiction, retelling the story of famous animated films with the gang inserted into them. While fans of the franchise may no longer be fazed by the concept of this collaboration, many still find it’s plot just as befuddling.
