Top 10 Movies That Could Have Starred Scarlett Johansson

Since the turn of the century she has become film reel royalty, and these are all of her best bits! Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top 10 Scarlett Johansson performances! For this list, we’re taking a look at those performances that show off this actress at her finest and/or most memorable.

#10: Rebecca “Ghost World” (2001)

An early Scarlett Johansson effort, when this movie came out our leading lady was just sixteen years old! As Rebecca, she portrays fifty percent of a post-high school pairing, along with an equally young Thora Birch, and unravels a coming of age story that is at once cute and cutting! “Ghost World” has grown in critical stature since its release, and Johansson’s reputation has snowballed spectacularly as well - for many, this film is where it all began for our NYC-born superstar!

#9: Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow Marvel Cinematic Universe (2010-)

In terms of performances that have brought home the box office bacon, the Black Widow is Johansson’s biggest success! Inducted into the Marvel Universe in 2010 for “Iron Man 2,” the Natasha Romanoff role has been expanding ever since! A central figure in the 2012 super-film, “The Avengers,” as well as 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Scarlett’s ultra-secretive, skilled and utterly complex super-heroine does not look likely to be stomped out any time soon! With an edgy attitude and allure that demands extra screen time, we can expect to be routinely caught in this one’s web!

#8: Barbara Sugarman “Don Jon” (2013)

In Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s feature-length writing and directorial debut, he plays a porn addict, and he casts Scarlett Johansson as his girlfriend - and if that’s not making the most of a situation, then we don’t know what is! Scarlett is Barbara Sugarman - a sweet name for a typically seductive role. However, the attractiveness to Johansson’s character is less X-rated, and more romantic - which provides the film’s major problem point! Should anyone really need PornHub when they’ve got ScarJo??

#7: Olivia Wenscombe “The Prestige” (2006)

The 2000s were a decade in which Hollywood got a little hooked on all things magic and illusion, but Johansson’s outing as Olivia Wenscombe in “The Prestige” has to be one of the most spell-binding out there! A supporting role to Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman, she’s a go-between for ‘The Professor’ and ‘The Great Danton’, but she’s able to stand herself out in amongst the several identity switches and well-hidden redirections of the plot! It’s no trick, she really is this good!

#6: Griet “Girl with a Pearl Earring” (2003)

There are few actresses able to play sexy seductiveness and pure prettiness equally as well, but Scarlett Johansson has both roles really worked out! As the eponymous ‘girl with a pearl earring’, the actress arrives into the world of high art with shy style and aplomb! The servant to famed painter Johannes Vermeer, in this adaptation of the best-selling Tracy Chevalier novel we get to see the sweeter side to Scarlett, and a subsequent naive vulnerability that has us all hoping for the best, but expecting something else!

#5: Nameless Character “Under the Skin” (2013)

Also in:

Top 10 Movies with Nameless Characters

On many an occasion has ScarJo been summarised as ‘out of this world’, but for her next role she literally was! “Under the Skin” saw the recent sci-fi boom at the cinema, partook in it, and played around with it... big time! An almost art-house production, this flick sees Johansson as the character around which all of the curious creepiness centers. An alien creature stalking the streets for human prey, she’s unsurprisingly irresistible to mere mortals! In “Under the Skin” Scarlett gets into our heads, and stays there!

#4: Cristina “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” (2008)

The seduction shows no sign of stopping with our next film, as Johansson famously plays the most desirable of third wheels to the relationship between Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. Bardem sure got lucky with this script, having two of the planet’s prettiest people to cavort with... But Johansson’s character is more than sheer sex appeal (although she does have awesome amounts of that!). This is a picking apart of relationships, and a piecing of them back together again - and Scarlett is central to the movie’s success!

#3: Samantha “Her” (2013)

The voice is always vital when it comes to acting well, but in this Spike Jonze sensation of a movie, it’s inescapably important for Johansson! Our subject’s delightfully dulcet tones give life to some especially advanced artificial intelligence, and they give Joaquin Phoenix what he was otherwise lacking in life - hope and companionship! She may not be ‘real’ exactly, but even in robotic form, Scarlett’s a show-stealer! They should really get her voice acting on alarm clocks or something... Or microwaves... Or SatNavs... Or...

#2: Nola Rice “Match Point” (2005)

What not to do when you marry into a wealthy family... That’s right, sleep with your soon-to-be brother-in-law’s girlfriend! But, to be fair to Jonathon Rhys Meyer’s character Chris Wilton, said girlfriend is today’s leading lady! Scarlett Johansson proves irresistible once again in this Woody Allen picture that doesn’t just pick apart a family, but basically blows it up entirely! The film was, for many, a return to form for Woody Allen... For Scarlett though, it was but another string to her ever-increasing Hollywood bow! Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. - Birdy Abundas “The Man Who Wasn’t There” (2001) - Lucy “Lucy” (2014) - Purslane Will “A Love Song for Bobby Long” (2004) - Grace MacLean “The Horse Whisperer” (1998)

#1: Charlotte “Lost in Translation” (2003)

We’re headed to the Far East for Scarlett’s most spectacular of cinematic outings, and to a Sofia Coppola film that gets more and more fantastic every time you see it! “Lost in Translation” has us laughing, crying, crossing our fingers and really, truly believing in its characters... Johansson’s breath-taking performance as sweet, a little unsure of herself Charlotte, was proof for us all to see... Yes, she’s a particularly pretty face, but Scarlett has incredible talent that outshines even her exceptional good looks! Do you agree with our list? Which Scarlett Johansson film is your favorite?
