10 Most Unsettling Easter Eggs in Resident Evil Games

Welcome to MojoPlays, and today we’re looking at the 10 most unsettling easter eggs across the “Resident Evil” games! This video contains spoilers, so proceed with caution!

Loading Screen Scare

“Resident Evil 2” (1998)

In the original “Resident Evil 2,” the door-opening animation serves as both a loading screen and the illusion of safety. Most players take this as a second to catch their breath, but a rare occurrence in the R.P.D. basement subverts this expectation! As the door opens and the load screen starts, you’re instead met with two zombies heading towards you, and the transition to the next room gets cancelled with you now having to fight them. It’s a legendary RE2 moment, but sadly they couldn’t fully replicate it with the remake considering doors now don’t have loading screens. That didn’t stop them from trying with this new jumpscare in the remake, though!

Scary Face Glitch

“Resident Evil 3: Nemesis” (1999)

Within the original “Resident Evil 3: Nemesis,” players have found what at least initially appears to be a terrifying glitch, although what it is for sure is hard to say… It’s this morbid thing, and it appears to be Regina from “Dino Crisis,” although it’s hard to say for sure! Of course, it could also be an intentional easter egg, considering Jill can actually turn into Regina with a costume in the game. The two games even originally shipped with demos of one another, so it’s entirely possible this is just a really unsettling and obscure easter egg! The game was already scary enough, good luck sleeping with THIS nightmare fuel in mind!

Baker Family Incident Report

“Resident Evil Village” (2021)

If you bought the Deluxe Edition or the Trauma Pack DLC for “Resident Evil Village,” you gain access to a special file titled “The Baker Incident Report.” It’s written by Zoe Baker and not only bridges the two games, but also contains letters between her and Mia. The report reveals that the events in Louisiana were not a random tragedy but actually a monitored experiment overseen by Mother Miranda and The Connections. It’s nice to definitively have the Baker family explained, but it’s also really tragic knowing how they suffered, especially if you’ve played “Resident Evil 7’s” DLC.

D.I.J.

“Resident Evil - Code: Veronica” (2000)

Throughout the events of “Code: Veronica X,” a small rodent who you later learn is named D.I.J. appears in several background locations across Rockfort Island and the Antarctic Base. It always seems to run away just as Claire or Chris enters a room, like with the jail cell area or the training facility. It might initially seem like any other random rat or mouse, it turns out to be stalking you. D.I.J is actually intelligent and appears to be documenting the events of the game, which you can find and read in their diary in the Battle Game mode. Even though it’s just a developer joke, it’s pretty scary coming to the realization that we are being watched throughout most of the game!

First Zombie Throwback

“Resident Evil 6” (2012)

“Resident Evil 6” actually includes a pretty well-hidden tribute to the game that started it all. If your health is depleted and you’re in a last stand state, let a regular zombie grab you, don’t mash or press any of the prompt buttons to escape and simply let the animation play out as it kills you. Instead of the standard game over, the camera zooms in on the zombie as it slowly turns its head toward the screen, mimicking the iconic cinematic from the intro of the original 1996 “Resident Evil” game!

It Hurts to Breathe

“Resident Evil” (1996)

In one of, if not the earliest builds of the first “Resident Evil” are several unused and pretty disturbing written in blood. They don’t appear in any other versions than the “Taikenban,” or trial version if you will. You can interact with it like when you read any other stuff in the games, having the text show up on screen as “Something is written.” “It hurts to breathe. Someone end this suffering.” Talk about unsettling! Capcom likely thought this was a bit too dark and decided to scrap it because of that.

Radio Call

“Resident Evil 3” (2020)

In the “Resident Evil 3” remake, Jill encounters a few subtle nods to the “Resident Evil Outbreak” series. While leaving Kendo’s Gun Shop, when passing a police car, you’ll hear a frantic distress call from a police officer. The voice belongs to a character named Kevin who is from the Outbreak games. He’s asking for help and pretty much describes the first mission in Outbreak where he’s trapped with three other civilians, one of whom can’t walk. It’s nice to see the games haven’t been forgotten by the devs, but it also reminds us there’s other survivors than Jill right now facing the zombie horrors of Raccoon City!

Ghost Woman

“Resident Evil 7: Beginning Hour” (2016)

The “Resident Evil 7: Beginning Hour” demo features seven brief, flickering appearances of a ghostly woman throughout the VHS tape segment. She visually appears to be Mia, and you can find her in seven different spots: At the porch, over the doorway, behind you in the first hallway, when you descend the ladder, outside a window in the kitchen, inside the room with the voodoo doll, and on the stairs. They’re not part of the main scripted scares and can only be triggered by looking in these spots, but you can’t be looking directly at them, she only spawns when you aren’t aiming in her general vicinity! To make sure you see her, flick your camera away and then back for her to appear.

The Body Bag

“Resident Evil 4” (2005)

During the Island laboratory section of “Resident Evil 4,” you can find a terrifying thing inside a red dumpster found in the prison area, near the entrance in Chapter 5-4. It’s made infinitely worse by the fact that it doesn’t immediately move when you open the dumpster, you actually get just enough seconds to let your guard down before the bag starts violently shaking as a jumpscare! What’s more, nobody has ever figured out what it is or what’s in it, and Capcom hasn’t confirmed anything either. Unfortunately, the remake doesn’t expand on it aside from the new addition of body bag Regeneradors in Chapter 15.

The Final Puzzle

“Resident Evil Requiem” (2026)

‘The Final Puzzle’ in “Resident Evil: Requiem” is easily the most complicated and eerie puzzle the series has ever concocted. It’s actually really elaborate, but here’s the cliffnotes: To initiate it, you have to wait in the grinder basement for fifteen minutes without killing any infected, ensuring 115 bodies are processed into the blood pit. After draining the pit and flushing the facility’s toilet eight times, the increased blood flow causes Marie’s doll to drop at the bottom of the escape stairs. You need this doll, and it’ll appear in your next ‘new game’ if you keep it on you when you finish the game. With it, in your new game you’ll be able to enter a code in the doctor’s office. The code is found by analyzing the Severed Hand in the Blood Lab. Finally inputting the code completes the puzzle and yields this super creepy laugh.
