#10: “Señorita” Justified (2003)

The first entry on our list is unlike any other Justin Timberlake song. Appearing on his debut album Justified, “Señorita” is renowned for its R&B rhythm combined with a Spanish influence. Chad Hugo and Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes helped Timberlake write the lyrics, while JT has also stated that the track was heavily influenced by Stevie Wonder. The up-tempo beat has made the song a popular summer tune, and it’s cool, breezy music video only adds to the summer flavor.

Only JT could claim that his girl looks like a model, only with a little more ass. “LoveStoned’s” sexually suggestive lyrics combined with its up-tempo beat make it the perfect club song. The slow, guitar-based “I Think She Knows” interlude contrasts perfectly with the first part of the song, allowing Timberlake to display his own vocal talent while still incorporating Timbaland’s sick beats. The track also won Justin the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording in 2008, and earned him a number one hit on the U.S Hot Dance Club Chart.

What makes JT so great is his willingness to mix up his songs, which is best exemplified by “Summer Love”. The sixth and final single from the FutureSex/LoveSounds album, “Summer Love” can almost be classified as a rap song, as JT rattles off word after word during the track’s verses. Reaching platinum status in the U.S, it was near impossible to find someone who wasn’t jamming out to this JT track in the Summer of ’07.

The first single released by Timberlake following the break-up of ‘N SYNC, this song proved JT was going to be a major force as a solo artist in the music industry. Timberlake started out strong, as the track reached the top spot on the Billboard US Hot Dance Club Songs chart, and number four on the Mainstream Top 40. The acoustic guitar background combined with the R&B rhythm gave JT a distinctive tone among mainstream artists, a style he would revisit and expand on in his future albums.

While the pop melody of this epic track made it a hit on the radio stations, JT shows off his story-telling prowess in “What Goes Around…Comes Around”, touching on issues such as betrayal and forgiveness. Coming in at 7 minutes and 28 seconds, it is one of Timberlake’s longer tracks, and acts almost as a sequel to his 2002 hit “Cry Me a River”. The music video featured a sexy Scarlett Johansson, and the song went on to win Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 2008 Grammy Awards. The most recent JT track to make our list, “Mirrors” shows Timberlake at his best. While a number of JT’s songs deal with break-ups, “Mirrors” is a new-age love song about a person’s other half. The tune was actually inspired by Timberlake’s grandparents, as evident in the music video, and proved that even over a decade after his first album, JT has still got it. It topped numerous international charts, and peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US.

The second single from JT’s sophomore album, “My Love” recounts Timberlake’s infatuation with a woman. JT’s terrific vocals combined with Timbaland’s beats once again prove to be a recipe for success. Add in an impressive verse from T.I., and you’re left with a true triple threat. The inclusion of the rap artist allowed JT to reach a whole new audience, evident by the song peaking at #2 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. This success was also recognized at the 2007 Grammy Awards, where the track won the award for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration.

While this song was the third single from Timberlake’s debut album and peaked at number five on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, it is perhaps best remembered as the song being played during his controversial Super Bowl XXXVIII performance with Janet Jackson. For better or worse, this song will always have a place in pop culture due to that incident, but its rhythmic beat and catchy vocals earned it a spot on our list. A groovy tune, this classic JT track utilized vintage sounding synthesizers and the signature Timberlake falsetto, creating one of Justin’s best efforts.

When Justin released the album FutureSex/LoveSounds in 2006, he was already extremely popular.
