We tune in every week just to see what these geniuses have cooked up. Welcome to WatchMojo.com, and today we’re counting down our picks for the top 10 fictional inventors from TV. For this list, we’re looking at inventors who create some of the wackiest, craziest, or most brilliant devices to grace the small screen.

#10: Stuart ‘Stu’ Pickles “Rugrats” (1991-2004)

Also in:

Top 10 Times Stuart Deserved Better on The Big Bang Theory

Stuart, or rather Stu Pickles, is a loving father and an absent-minded inventor who designs and builds children’s toys he hopes his kids will love to play with. However, given his scatterbrained nature, his inventions often malfunction or are just plain dangerous, and needless to say, shenanigans ensue. In spite of this, he remains one of our favorite characters on the show because it’s clear he’s just a big kid at heart, and the freaky clown dolls, hippos that fail to fly and other inventions are just proof of this.

#9: The Brain “Pinky and the Brain” (1995-98)

Also in:

Top 10 Pinky & the Brain Moments (ft. the Voices of Pinky & the Brain!)

Who knew that genetic experiments at Acme labs could turn a mouse so evil? This mouse in particular, The Brain, was turned into a genius, and one hell-bent on world domination. In almost every episode, he has a new invention, and pursues his lofty goal with his sidekick, Pinky, who unfortunately was not awarded the same advanced IQ. From a suit made to look like a human, to a hypnotic set of false teeth, to a machine that can make you go from smart to dumb and back lickety split, this Orson Welles sound-alike mouse with the perpetual brow furrow wins us over with his witty remarks and dastardly inventions.

#8: Donatello “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (1987-96)

The nerd of the group, Donnie’s the team’s go-to guy for gadgets and equipment. You need a form of transportation? He’ll give you the Turtle Van. How’s about a means of communication? Turtle comm. Need to make a flashy airborne getaway? Donnie’s got you covered with the Turtle Blimp. He’s more than just the team’s “Q” though, as he’s often along for the ride to use his creations against the forces of evil. That’s not to say they always work perfectly, but luckily when there’s a problem, he’s got a kickass team to back him up. Oh, and incase you can’t tell them apart: he’s the one in purple.

#7: Howard Wolowitz “The Big Bang Theory” (2007-)

Also in:

Top 10 Times Howard was the Best on The Big Bang Theory

He can invent AND rock a turtleneck; how many geniuses can say the same? The funny-man in his group of scientists, whenever Wolowitz isn’t practicing his hilarious impressions or hanging out with his equally nerdy friends, he’s working on big-ticket inventions. A space toilet, a long distance kissing machine, various robots; Howard’s covered it all. And, while they might not all be super-successful, one thing’s for sure: his inventions all have a goofy flare, but also a lot of thought and heart behind them.

#6: Billy Cranston “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers” (1993-95)

After being seen as a nerd for most of his life, he was selected by Zordon to join the team of Power Rangers and this was a huge turnaround for young William Cranston, better known as Billy. This blue-spangled protector was the brains of the operation, and used his skills to create inventions that got the Power Rangers team out of some of their toughest situations, whether it was the RADBUG, a machine that reads minds or the invaluable wrist communicator. Sure, Dr. K could’ve made our list, but part of the joy of seeing Billy through the years was watching him turn from the victimized youth into a man who could prove his own value.

#5: Prof. Hubert J. Farnsworth “Futurama” (1999-2013)

You can question his morality all you want, but you can’t deny his genius. Professor Farnsworth knows a thing or two about inventing; after all, he’s been doing it for god knows how many years. Don’t let his age fool you though; he’s still one of the best inventors around in spite of what some of his peers think: after all, who wouldn’t want a Smell-o-Scope, a Fing-Longer, a What-If machine, a Mind-Switcher or a Forwards Time Machine? Or perhaps even your own clone? Farnsworth’s inventions will come in handy faster than you can say: Good News!

#4: Prof. John Nerdelbaum Frink, Jr. “The Simpsons” (1989-)

In a show that uses stereotypes to their fullest extent to flesh out characters, you can only imagine what this inventor is like. With a bow tie that’d make Bill Nye jealous, Frink’s inventions are often bizarre and somewhat outlandish, and in spite of his best efforts to help Springfield, he often finds himself just creating more problems. Whether he’s trying to fund a death-ray, predict the outcome of sporting events, make super sour candy, and transport matter, he’s the summary of our favorite quirky scientists, and has come to represent what we love about all of them.

#3: Dexter “Dexter’s Laboratory” (1996-2003)

Also in:

Top 20 Serial Killers on Dexter

The words “surrounded by idiots” have never rung so true. Dexter’s a young prodigy, but his need to create is constantly hampered by his ruthlessly dimwitted sister, Dee Dee. In spite of her shenanigans, Dexter’s produced some astoundingly impressive creations, many of which are some form of robot. Within his secret laboratory, he’s brought his own his personal sentient supercomputer to life to keep the lab running smoothly, created a trio of fun-loving robots who are always up for a good time, and has even fashioned the Robo-Dexo 3000, which he designed to save Earth. A genius at that age? Just wait ‘til he gets older.

#2: Stewie Griffin “Family Guy” (1999-2003; 2005-)

Also in:

Top 10 Times Stewie Griffin Got What He Deserved on Family Guy

…Now imagine if Dexter turned evil. Stewie isn’t a boy genius; he’s a baby genius, and a pure evil one at that. With his plans bouncing between world domination and matricide, his inventions come in a wide range, from death-rays, to time machines, to devices that allow him to travel to parallel universes. And, it’s from these gadgets that “Family Guy” has derived some of its best episodes. After all, not every series traverses the Multiverse, parodies “Back to the Future” AND travels inside a character for the sole purpose of killing sperm. A fan favorite character, this oddly accented infant makes our list with a bullet – or a death ray, as the case may be. Before we move on to our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions: - Sheldon Plankton “SpongeBob SquarePants” (1999-) - Tracey McBean “Tracey McBean” (2001-06) - Taotie “Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness” (2011-) - Azmuth “Ben 10” franchise (2005-)

#1: Angus MacGyver “MacGyver” (1985-92)

Everyone’s favorite mullet-sporting jack-of-all-trades has a background in science, and a quicker-than-average mind, which he uses to get out of scrapes of varying degrees in his job as a secret agent. Not a gun fan, MacGyver instead carries a Swiss Army knife, duct tape and a paperclip, which – in his hands – can be deadly. Not only are his inventions practical and hugely effective, the fact that the eponymous character makes them on the fly with whatever’s at hand cements him as a genius. And, for all you budding secret agents out there: the show’s creators tried to ensure all Mac’s inventions were theoretically possible IRL. So, you can be your own MacGyver, as long as you bring your trusty Swiss Army knife. Did you agree with our list? What small screen inventors did we miss?
