Top 10 Fashion & Beauty Trends That Started on TikTok

Top 10 Fashion & Beauty Trends That Started on TikTok
VOICE OVER: Rebecca Brayton WRITTEN BY: Savannah Sher
Thank you, TikTok, for starting these fashion/beauty trends. Our countdown includes robe curls, tennis skirts, tie dye, and more!

#10: Shades of Brown

While dark hues like black and navy are pretty much always in style, dark brown hasn’t been a wardrobe staple for many in recent years. Since taking off on TikTok, however, chocolates, mahoganys, and mocha shades have been ruling social media. This follows the recent trends of monochromatic dressing and warm-toned neutrals but brings new depth along with a moody vibe. The best part is that dark brown goes with just about anything, including other dark neutrals like black and navy as well as pastel tones and the cream colors that are still so ubiquitous.

#9: Robe Curls

Heatless hairstyles have long been popular because they get the job done without damaging your hair. While this particular version may seem like a gimmick, it has gone viral on TikTok because it actually works. Get perfect beachy waves or tighter ringlets overnight using the tie from your favorite bathrobe. Simply separate your hair into two sections, drape the sash over your head so that it hangs down on both sides, and then and wrap each section around the robe as tightly or as loosely as you want to create curls and waves of different sizes.

#8: Aerie Crossover Leggings

TikTok is often responsible for a specific article of clothing going viral, which is exactly what happened with Aerie’s Crossover Leggings. Influencer Hannah Schlenker is credited with having brought the leggings to TikTok’s attention with her hundreds of thousands of followers. She snagged a pair for a sorority event and then showed them off online, extolling their ultra flattering effect. Since skyrocketing in popularity, Aerie has vastly expanded their Crossover line, making swim bottoms, yoga pants, and bike shorts with the same iconic waistline that seems to make everyone who wears it feel confident.

#7: Tennis Skirts

Addison Rae is one of TikTok’s biggest breakout stars, and she can be credited with kicking off this throwback trend. In one of her videos, she wore a short pleated skirt that’s reminiscent of what women have traditionally worn to play tennis. It’s a style that was seen on Princess Diana at the height of her sartorial influence and has become popular again today. It’s a preppy look that works for a sporty ensemble if worn in all white, but can also take on an edgier style in patterns like plaid.

#6: Fox Brows

We’re skeptical of any trend that involves shaving off any part of your eyebrows, but this one actually seems to have pretty positive results. The fox brows or fox eye trend was inspired by Bella Hadid’s vulpine look and totally changes the structure of your face by shaving off the ends of your eyebrows in order to draw them back in at a higher angle. You can also participate in this trend without doing any permanent damage by simply covering the tails of your brows in heavy-duty concealer before reshaping them.

#5: Crease-Free Foundation Trick

Most people who wear foundation follow the same basic application routine. Start by applying moisturizer or primer, put on the foundation, then finish with powder and setting spray. Now what would happen if you mixed it up and essentially followed those final steps in reverse? According to TikTok at least, the result is flawless, crease-free foundation. Use translucent powder and setting spray before applying foundation, to create a perfect blank canvas. Results may be mixed, but it’s definitely worth a try!

#4: Soap Brows

The concept of soap brows wasn’t invented on TikTok, but it has been popularized for a whole new generation of beauty lovers. The intention is to create fluffy, natural looking eyebrows using just a bar of soap and a clean spoolie. Simply coat the spoolie in soap and brush through your brows. The soap not only holds them in place and makes them look fuller, but it’s also a heck of a lot cheaper than buying brow gel. For best results, look for a bar of soap that’s glycerin-based because its pH level makes it safe to use on your face.

#3: Tie Dye

Tie Dye has been around for ages, and was popularized in the hippie culture of the 1960s and ‘70s. But it’s now back in style, due in no small part to its many appearances on TikTok. Tie dyed loungewear has been particularly prevalent, with matching sweatsuits being seen on a number of the social media network’s biggest influencers. Now you can find tie dyed pants, sweatshirts, t-shirts, scrunchies, and other accessories in high street stores, but it’s also a fun DIY activity to try at home with old clothing that you want to revamp.

#2: Dark Circles

Top 10 Dark Truths About the Beauty Industry

Who wants to look more exhausted? Apparently TikTok teens do! Believe it or not, there are tutorials on the platform for how to create faux bags under your eyes using makeup techniques. They use eye shadow or even lipstick to darken the undereye area. Usually people are trying to cover up their dark circles, not make them any more prominent. The intention seems to be to create a more natural, dressed-down look. Clearly the youngsters participating in this trend can still wake up looking bright eyed even after pulling an all-nighter cramming for exams. Top 10 Fashion & Beauty Trends That Will Rule 2020

Millennials may not be ready to admit it, but Y2K was now over two decades ago, and the fashion and beauty trends seen at the turn of the millennium are coming back into style due largely to their popularity on TikTok. From half up half down pigtails to pastel eye makeup to candy-colored clothing, teens today seem to be dressing just like they did back in 2000. This trend is pretty much the antithesis of the sophisticated neutral looks that have been so popular lately, bringing a little bit of fun back into the fashion and beauty world.
