For this list, we’re taking a look at actors, singers, and filmmakers who either spoke out about their disdain for award shows or straight up refused their awards.
#10: Snoop Dogg

Discovered in 1992 by Dr. Dre, this rap legend and actor has since sold over 30 million albums worldwide and has even earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Despite winning many awards, including an American Music Award and several MTV and Source Awards, he has been nominated numerous times but never won the much coveted Grammy Award. This may be the reason he condemned the show in 2015 and 2018 for not representing rap musicians, and even declared that a separate hip-hop awards show is the only solution. To boot, he’s even been very vocal in his disgust with the Academy Awards.

Starting out as a child model, a life in the public eye has been all that this actress, singer, and director has ever known. She first gained recognition on the Disney Channel as CeCe Jones in the TV show “Shake It Up” and with hit songs like “Watch Me.” More recently, she can be seen acting in 2018’s “Midnight Sun.” Despite her prominence and numerous nominations, though, Thorne has spoken out against the Teen Choice Awards on Twitter and boycotted the show in 2018. She has listed the competition among young people, the categories that honor superficial traits, and the fact that, according to Thorne, the “whole thing is rigged anyway” as a real turn off from the whole event.

This anonymous street artist is most commonly known for his use of graffiti to express his views on the social and political climate. Often controversial – especially due to the nature of his art, which is essentially vandalism – Banksy has still triggered a cult following and his works have sold for millions of dollars altogether. His documentary “Exit Through the Gift Shop” may have been the highlight of his career and was even nominated for an Oscar, but he was not allowed to enter the ceremony in a mask, which was his stipulation. He has publicly declared that he doesn’t “agree with the concept of award ceremonies,” and you can be sure he feels even more strongly after his rejection.

This country singer, songwriter, and occasional actor has enjoyed his share of Top 10 Singles and platinum albums. He even has the distinction of having sung the most-played country song of an entire decade with 1993’s “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.” He even tried his hand at the acting game, and is remembered for starring alongside Burt Reynolds in “Broken Bridges.” Despite his success, Keith avoided the Country Music Awards for years, claiming that it just wasn’t “his bag.” His reasoning that he had 24 nominations in 3 years with no wins convinced him the show was “too political” and not “worth his time.”

Still viewed today as one of the greatest American actors of his generation, George C. Scott won numerous awards and was nominated for many Oscars. Some of his most notable nominations were for films like “Anatomy of a Murder”, “The Hustler”, and “The Hospital”. However, it was for his remarkable performance in “Patton” that Scott finally won the coveted Best Actor award. To the shock of fans everywhere, however, Scott became the first actor to turn down the Award, finding the awards ceremony “demeaning” to actors and nothing but a “two-hour meat parade.”

This beloved director has been wowing us ever since directing 1986’s classic “She’s Gotta Have It,” and has shown that he is not afraid of backing down from tough topics like poverty and discrimination. He is also known for films like “Do the Right Thing,” “Malcolm X,” and “BlacKkKlansman.” Despite winning an honorary Academy Award in 2015 for his contributions to filmmaking, he refused to attend the Oscars the next year due to the absence of racial diversity in the nominations. He has also called the ceremony “white-washed” and has publicly called on the television and film executives to give more opportunities to minorities.

However, the award-winner has publicly spoken out against the way the Grammys have treated hip-hop artists, and was so upset that he didn’t even submit his album “More Life” for consideration for the 2018 ceremony. He couldn’t even hold back from dissing the show in a 2019 acceptance speech.

He has blasted Beck’s win for Album of the Year, his receiving only two nominations for his album “Yeezus”, and he even said he’d boycott the show if his pal Frank Ocean wasn’t nominated. She has been called the greatest classic actress in Hollywood. Unmatched for the amount of Oscars for a leading performance (a whopping four wins), Katherine Hepburn graced the screen for over 60 years in fantastic roles. She won in 1934 for “Morning Glory,” in 1968 for “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner,” in 1969 for “The Lion in Winter,” and in 1982 for “On Golden Pond.” Despite all of her wins (and eight other nominations), she only once attended the Academy Awards, and it wasn’t even for a year she won. Not one for glitz and glam, Hepburn reportedly said: “As for me, prizes are nothing. My prize is my work.”

He still remains the last man to reject an Academy Award. Although having won an Oscar in 1954 for his work in “On the Waterfront” and shown up to the ceremony to accept it, the passage of time changed the way the acclaimed actor viewed the industry. When Marlon Brando won for his performance as Vito Corleone in 1972’s “The Godfather,” which is considered to be his finest, he declined the award due to the film industry’s treatment of Native Americans. In his stead, Brando sent Apache actress and activist Littlefeather, in a motion that was met with both support and criticism down to this day.
