Top 10 Callbacks in The Devil Wears Prada 2
#10: The Opening Credits
Once again, we commence with Andy waking up to another day in New York. While this opening echoes its predecessor, Andy’s sense of style has radically changed since we first saw her. Andy’s confidence shines through in her wardrobe and hairdo, making these two intros feel like before-and-after photos. The opening works in a few other nods to the original film. Walking down the streets, Andy passes by a banner reading, “Spring Florals,” alluding to Miranda’s “groundbreaking” line. Andy also spots a vendor showing a potential patron two blue belts. The old Andy wouldn’t have given such a choice much thought. After Miranda’s cerulean speech, though, Andy knows all too well that there are various hues of blue, and she can tell the difference now.
#9: Meeting in Miranda’s Office
Hired as Runway’s features editor, Andy finds herself back in Miranda’s office. Andy isn’t the same unkempt underdog who first interviewed to be Miranda’s assistant twenty years ago. Within the first few minutes of returning to Runway, though, Andy starts to feel like her old self. Nigel playfully refers to her as six, even though she dropped to a size four. Miranda, meanwhile, doesn’t remember Andy… at least, she acts like she doesn’t. Nigel tries to jog Miranda’s memory, saying that Andy was one of the Emilys. This only confuses Miranda further, especially since the actual Emily doesn’t work at Runway anymore. Miranda also still drinks Starbucks, although we can only assume it’s a no-foam skimmed latte with an extra shot.
#8: Sleeping with a Colleague
When we last saw Andy’s friend Lily, she came off as pretty judgmental, shunning her over a peck on the cheek from Christian when she was still dating Nate. Of course, we all know that Nate was the worst, and Lily totally overreacted. Despite this, Andy and Lily have reconciled in the sequel, though Nate is thankfully nowhere to be found. Christian doesn’t make an appearance either, but his fling with Andy is touched upon. As Andy discusses her journalistic integrity, she notes that she has never slept with a colleague. Lily points out that’s not entirely true, as Andy did have a one-night stand with Christian in Paris. Andy ended it the next morning, realizing that Christian wasn’t as charming as he seemed.
#7: Andy & Nigel’s Dynamic
Corn chowder doesn’t appear to be on the menu, but Andy again grabs lunch at the Runway cafeteria. Andy still eats carbs, having a wrap with her soup. As Andy sits down with Nigel, it feels like little time has passed. While Nigel is as catty as ever, he remains a friend and mentor to Andy. He knows when to give Andy tough love, reminding her that nobody is going to give her a pat on the head when she does right or a lollipop when she’s feeling down. At the same time, Nigel provides more than constructive criticism. Andy doesn’t need a makeover as desperately as she did in the first film. Nigel is nonetheless there for fashion advice when Andy needs it.
#6: Coat on Desk
Miranda Priestly hasn’t gone soft, but in an age where more famous people are being called out for their behavior, she’s been forced to make some adjustments. Andy is taken aback to see Miranda hanging her own coat in her office. She distinctly remembers Miranda throwing her coats and purses on her desk every day while assigning tasks. While Andy reluctantly accepted this as the status quo at Runway, at least one of her successors would file an HR complaint. Thus, Miranda must check her own coat now. It may seem like a trivial inconvenience, but it reflects how the workplace has changed in the past two decades, even requiring Miranda to think twice about how she treats subordinates.
#5: Giving Clothes to Emily
Feeling bad about taking her spot at Paris Fashion Week, Andy asked Emily to take all of the clothes she received off her hands. Having left Runway to pursue her journalism career, Andy figured she wouldn’t have many opportunities to wear them anyway. Now back at Runway, Andy relays this story to Miranda’s new first assistant, Amari. As generous as Andy’s actions were, all Amari hears is that she gave away Chanel. While Andy is more fashionable than before, she doesn’t live and breathe this “stuff” like the other Runway employees. As such, Amari doesn’t feel too bad about showing Andy to a small, cramped office, emphasizing that she’s still very much a fish out of water.
#4: Don’t Go Upstairs
Being Miranda’s assistant isn’t easy, but it’s still a job that a million girls (and guys) would kill for. In addition to Amari, Miranda has a second assistant named Charlie. Andy can relate to Charlie, who has to spend most of his time behind a desk, even when he needs to use the bathroom. Although Runway has gone digital, Miranda hasn’t done away with the Book. Andy advises Charlie that if he’s ever asked to deliver the Book to Miranda’s home, never go upstairs. She fell into that trap when Miranda’s twins tricked her into walking in on Miranda and her soon-to-be-ex-husband arguing. Andy doesn’t share that part with Charlie, who can’t believe anyone would be foolish enough to go upstairs.
#3: Carbs
When Emily found out in the previous film that Andy would be going to Paris in her place, she did the unthinkable: she ate carbs! If Andy can have bread and pudding, why should Emily deprive herself? Despite their differences, both films see Andy and Emily part on friendly terms. In “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” they meet for lunch, where Emily allows herself to partake in some French fries. Emily argues that she’s splitting the fries with Andy, and shared carbs don’t count. We’re not sure that’s how it works, but whatever enables Emily to treat herself. The fact that Emily and Andy are technically eating French cuisine could also be a reference to Paris, which seems to be water under the bridge.
#2: That’s All
If there’s one Miranda Priestly line we constantly quote, it’s “That’s all.” In the original film, her catchphrase is repeatedly used to comedic effect. The sequel uses the line sparingly, reserving it for a crucial scene where Miranda finds out that Emily’s wealthy boyfriend is buying Runway. When he does, Emily will be put in charge, much to Andy’s surprise. Although it seems Emily has bested everyone, Miranda knows that she’s setting herself up for failure. Miranda delivers a monologue detailing why Emily didn’t climb the ladder at Runway and why she’s ill-equipped to run it now. By the time Miranda is done, Emily is without words. Miranda has two more, however: “That’s all.” Those words have never stung more.
#1: Miranda Making It Up To Nigel
Although it appeared Nigel would get to pursue a new role as James Holt’s creative director, Miranda instead gave the job to Jacqueline as part of a ploy to keep her own position. Taking the blow in stride, Nigel told Andy that Miranda would make it up to him, but even he didn’t seem to believe that deep down. Miranda finally does right by Nigel in Milan. Having to suddenly depart, Andy suggests that Nigel fill in for Miranda at an event. Miranda assumes that Nigel doesn’t want the spotlight. Taking a second to reflect, though, Miranda sees that Nigel has been patient, working as her right-hand while never asking for what he really wants. After years of faithful service, Miranda gives Nigel his moment.
