Top 10 Funniest Arrested Development Bloopers
#10: Zach Braff
We’re not sure how anyone kept a straight face whenever David Cross wore his denim cutoffs. Tobias Fünke’s struggle as a person of “never-nude” experience, which is exactly how it sounds, was given a hilarious punchline in season 2’s spring break episode. Zach Braff guest starred as Phillip Litt, the producer of a sleazy, adult video series, who is ironically a never-nude himself. Braff is unable to keep it together when Cross comes at him with his own deadpan approach. Their not-safe-for-work improv makes for a particularly fun outtake from one of the show's classic episodes.
#9: “How Dare You…”
Jeffrey Tambor is just trying to get this scene right. On-screen son Jason Bateman is clearly trying not to interfere, waiting patiently until he gets it. Tambor repeats the sentence, “How dare you,” several times in a row, but he can’t quite get the line reading he wants. Just when he seems to have managed a take he can live with, Bateman is the one who breaks character. Tambor’s disappointment is the funniest part. Now he decides to laugh? But between the two of them, the odds of them getting through this scene anytime soon are getting slimmer and slimmer.
#8: “Your Fault”
Most of the things that happen on “Arrested Development” are absurd if not completely surreal. In Jason Bateman’s defense, how is one supposed to keep their composure when a man in a full-size banana suit crosses your eyeline? Bateman immediately flubs a take with Michael Cera as his on-screen son crosses in front of him wearing a banana suit. He jokingly blames Cera for his mistake, ordering him to get back to his mark so they can start the scene again. Despite the vulgarity, it’s a brief but wholesome look at the camaraderie on set.
#7: “I Have to … Give Up”
As Lucille Bluth, Jessica Walter was the ice queen to end them all. Her voice alone could terrify her on-screen children. When the actress makes a mistake, that hardened façade falls away entirely. During one scene in the Bluth Company board room, Walter is desperately trying to remember her line, and she can’t. We’re not sure what the dialogue actually is here. We only know that she starts the line with enthusiasm, and she ends it with a whimper. It’s the blooper equivalent of a balloon leaking all its helium. You’d never know she was the same woman who treated drinking contests like tea parties.
#6: “Nips”
One thing the show’s outtakes reveal is that, despite playing the most normal Bluth relative, Jason Bateman is anything but. His comedic chemistry with David Cross is a case of opposites attracting. Bateman is the straight man and Cross is the absurd one. A blooper from the show’s third season reveals that, sometimes, they switch roles. In a scene where Cross is showing Bateman his chest, Bateman starts ordering his co-star to raise his shirt even higher. Whether he’s telling Cross he can’t see his nipples for the camera’s sake or for his own, it’s a bizarre and quirky exchange that turns suddenly risqué.
#5: Gift Certificate
In a scene where Michael Bluth shows his brother-in-law, Tobias Fünke, his birth certificate, actor Jason Bateman flubs just one word. He refers to the paper as a gift certificate instead. Rather than simply stopping the scene, co-star David Cross simply continues on, ad-libbing the next line in response. Michael’s birth was a gift, if you really think about it. The quickness with which Cross “yes, ands” that mistake is something only a true improviser can do. It’s so good because it almost sounds like something Tobias would say if Michael had made that mistake himself.
#4: Jason Bateman vs. the Mic
Filming a scene with Portia de Rossi, Jason Bateman can’t stop screwing up his lines. He’s stressing the wrong syllables and sounds completely unnatural. His profane outbursts are funny enough. When he finally does get through the line, de Rossi starts laughing and imitating his reading of the line. Fed up, he lightheartedly pops the windscreen off the shotgun mic, tries to place it on his face like a clown nose, and finally throws it. When a crewmember tells him they’ll need it, he jokingly remarks there’s “no wind in here,” and insists they keep going with the scene.
#3: “What’s the Line? It’s a Good One.”
As the Bluth family patriarch, Jeffrey Tambor mastered the throwaway joke. His ability to pass off some unhinged dialogue as no big deal is one of his strengths. Performing a scene in the Bluth family’s attic, Tambor suddenly goes up on his next line. Instead of cursing himself, he plays it off. He asks for the line he forgot in the most charming way. Instead of just saying “line,” he asks for the line and even compliments it, even though he can’t quite remember it. At least the writers will be happy to hear that.
#2: Eyebrows
Ed Begley Jr. played Bluth business rival Stan Sitwell, a man who suffers from alopecia. As a result, he wears fake eyebrows that are constantly threatening to make a break for it. Will Arnett seems to find these eyebrows a particularly challenging scene partner. The big, bushy eyebrows begin to pull away from Begley’s face. Jostled out of place by so much as a slight breeze, the eyebrows begin to lower over the actor’s eyes like a curtain, sending the men into convulsing laughter. Just when you think they’ve managed it, Begley lets out a burst of laughter, sending the eyebrows out of place yet again.
#1: Mrs. Featherbottom’s Nose
Season 2 sees Tobias Fünke pretending to be a female British housekeeper modeled after Mrs. Doubtfire and Mary Poppins. In character as Mrs. Featherbottom, Tobias’ off-pitch singing and attempts to emotionally connect with his daughter are mostly pathetic. He even breaks into song to try to cheer her up. It’s during one of these moments that Cross’ prosthetic nose comes loose as he tries to use a tissue. The fluttering of the prosthetic, which is just barely holding onto his real nose, gives the character’s reminder to keep a “stiff upper lip” a note of absurd irony.
