VOICE OVER: Peter DeGiglio WRITTEN BY: Aaron Brown
We are dying to play these video games! For this list, we'll be looking at games that have been shown off with full gameplay demos but still don't have release dates or have simply dropped off the radar. Our countdown includes “Skull & Bones”, “System Shock 3”, “Beyond Good & Evil 2”, and more!

#10: “Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2” (2021)

Like many entries on this list, Bloodlines 2 is a sequel to a game that didn’t do well upon its initial release, but became a cult classic thanks to love and word of mouth from the gaming community. When news of a true sequel with a AAA budget behind it broke in 2019, hopes were high that it could fully deliver on the first game’s untapped promise. However, as with many games affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been multiple delays. Worse, the game has lost key members of its development team along the way. We still have high hopes for this sequel, but it’s hard to keep up the Masquerade when we don’t know what’s going on.

#9: “Skull & Bones” (TBA)

The 10 BEST And WORST Things About Skull and Bones

Good pirate games are few and far between. One of the best is Ubisoft’s “Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag”, and evidently the company saw much more potential there. In 2017 Ubisoft revealed a new tactical action game “Skull & Bones”. However, between multiple delays and rumors of production starting over almost from scratch, there seems to be little hope of this title setting sail anytime soon. Ubisoft clearly has high hopes for the franchise, having announced a TV series based on the property, so we’ll have to just keep our eyes on the horizon.

#8: “The Last Night” (TBA)

10 Announced Games We Might Never Get to Play

Initially shown off on Microsoft’s main stage at E3 2017, “The Last Night” made an impression with its impressive pixel art aesthetic and Blade Runner-esque world. The game’s website still lists the game as “In Development” as of 2021 and includes a bevy of beautiful and tantalizing screen grabs and gifs of the game. But beyond the game’s reveal trailer and some additional footage, the news coming from this promising 2.5D platform game world is almost non-existent. Some behind the scenes drama may be to blame for the game’s lack of updates, but without any official word all we can do is speculate and hope for the best.

#7: “Wild” (TBA)

How Zelda: Breath of The Wild Changed Open World Games

“Wild” just might be too ambitious for its own good. First revealed in 2014, it’s a true beast of a game, the passion project of French designer Michel Ancel - best known for “Rayman” and “Beyond Good & Evil”. It’s set to feature a vast, procedurally generated open world, day and night cycles, real world weather effects, and the ability to possess animals to explore the environment. However, updates have been few and far between, and in 2020 Ancel left the project to work on another kind of “wild” - a real life wildlife sanctuary. The potential of this game looked enormous, but we’re not holding our breath while we wait!

#6: “Dead Island 2” (TBA)

10 Hidden Secrets In Dead Island 2

There’s a long list of games that were rumored to be vaporware - “Duke Nukem Forever” ... “The Last Guardian” ... that new “Silent Hill” game that your cousin’s dad who works at Konami SWEARS is secretly in development. “Dead Island 2” is one of those games. After Techland abandoned the property to work on Dying Light, the title has seen no less than three different developers trying to get this game out into the light of day. Despite publisher Deep Silver claiming the game is still coming along, we’re more than a little doubtful that it’ll ever be released.

#5: “System Shock 3” (TBA)

Despite poor sales, “System Shock 2” was a landmark game that amassed a cult following and had a lasting influence on first person shooters and the horror genre. But while we did get spiritual sequels in the forms of the “BioShock” franchise and “Prey”, we’ve been waiting for a true sequel for quite a while. Back in 2015, OtherSide Entertainment told fans that “System Shock 3” was on the way. Fast forward to 2021, and we’re still waiting. In the interim, Starbreeze returned the publishing rights, and a dozen employees left OtherSide. Development has now been taken over by Tencent. With such a troubled history, the future is NOT bright for “System Shock 3”.

#4: “Overwatch 2” (TBA)

Overwatch: The Complete Story Explained

Gamers were somewhat taken aback when Overwatch 2 was revealed at BlizzCon in 2019, due to the first game’s continued support and popularity. But they were nonetheless excited at the prospect of more Overwatch. The sequel promises story-based missions, new heroes and maps, and persistent player versus environment modes. But since its reveal alongside Diablo IV, there’s been radio silence. When the game launches, we’d bet that it’ll see the same critical and commercial success as its predecessor. But when will we actually get to play it? Can we just have a hint?!

#3: “Deep Down” (TBA)

Initially one of Sony’s showcase titles at the Playstation 4 reveal, this dungeon crawler from Capcom has since dropped off the radar. Showing off what the PS4 had the potential to create in terms of lighting and particle effects, the game was one of the most exciting titles revealed at the event. But to date, we still have yet to see just how deep down this game goes. Capcom’s renewal of the trademark for the game gives us hope that it might still exist in some way. But given how much time has passed since the game’s reveal, and Capcom’s focus on the “Resident Evil” franchise, we find our hopes slowly sinking.

#2: “Dying Light 2” (TBA)

There seems to be some kind of curse surrounding the follow ups to Techland’s zombie properties. Initially slated for release in 2020, the game has slipped into the “delayed indefinitely” territory. It’s currently unknown just when exactly we’ll get to try out our parkour skills in this ambitious sequel. News of the game’s lead writer leaving the project doesn’t build confidence. But given what we’ve seen so far, we still have our fingers crossed. Whether the delay was due to the ambitious nature of the game’s world and narrative, or the Covid-19 pandemic, we’d certainly take any news as good news moving forward. Before we unveil our top pick, here are a few honorable mentions. “Halo Infinite” (2021) A Disappointing Gameplay Reveal Sent This Title Back into Hiding “Earthworm Jim 4” (TBA) Announced in 2011, This Is Supposed to Release on the New Intellivision Amico Console

Michel Ancel strikes again! Despite the disappointing sales of the first title, the game’s cult following grew over the years, leaving fans clamoring for a sequel. After an initial teaser back in 2008 however, “Beyond Good & Evil 2” more or less disappeared until Ubisoft’s 2017 E3 presentation. While we’ve gotten multiple deep dives on gameplay details, showing off an unparalleled level of scale, gamers are still waiting with baited breath for news of a release date. Given the game’s ambition, and the fact that Michel Ancel has left the company, we worry this title could end up getting lost among the stars.
